Joe Hege I attended a screening on this film as part of the Framline 33 Film Festival here in San Francisco. I want to personally thank you, Kimberly Reed, for making this film. I am currently studying Occupational Therapy here in California and I am very interested in making Mental Health my specialty in the field. I had the experience last summer of observing a group of men and women who had traumatic brain injuries. What I observed in your film with your brother were behaviors that I had only read about. The segments where your brother became physically violent towards you brought to reality what families face dealing with someone with a mental illness and TBI. I can understand that the resources that were available to you and your family were not many. I do believe as an OT working in Mental Health that I can help families like yours handle the challenges that come up. Your mother is a very strong woman. All I can say is I will SPREAD THE WORD about the film. Everyone should see it.

Hi, I just became a fan, and I haven't even seen the film yet! I just discovered I missed its Vancouver screening by a few days. damn! I really look forward to seeing this film, as a sibling; as a documentary-lover; as a transsexual.
Looking forward to it coming out on DVD, but can hardly complain that it's not -- lots of lots of screenings going on, which is terrific. Congratulations, Kimberly!

Daniel Teixeira-Gomes Incredible film. Wonderful work Kim, and congrats on getting it shown at the Castro. Quite the honor, and well deserved.

Amber Patterson Tillery Kim, Thank you so much for sharing your family's story. This was a fantastic film on so many levels. I am so thouroughly impressed with your family for sticking together through so many trials. I had an opportunity to speak with your mother after the show. What an amazing woman. Every mother should strive to be as honest and accepting as she is. Claire deserves many Kudos as well, for accepting your family and committing to support them (I married into a family with mental illness as well and it is not easy) and for staying by your side through this entire process. The creation of this film and all of your time and energy spent had to have been a stress on your relationship. She is very dedicated to you and you are lucky to have her. Of course you are unbelievable too. To become your family's anchor in the midst of your own identity struggle tells a lot about the dedication and love for your family and the strength you have. I wish you the best of luck with this film. Thank you again.

thanks for your beautiful words, amber!

Susan Peck Dear Kim, I was so honored to see your film and so glad Dominic invited me. You are an exceptionally brave woman. Your mother, brother, Claire and of course Marc are also. What an amazing family throughout it all. If someone had written this script no one would have believed it. It is astonishing that you all lived it and are still living it. There are images and moments that will stay with me for a long time to come. Wishing all the best with all of your future screenings and all the accolades to come.

thanks so much, susan! sorry we couldn't talk more, but it was nice to meet you. maybe next trip. ciao/k

Sawyer Steele Thank you. My partner, friends and I have not stopped talking about this film for a hundred reasons. I'm a transguy and a filmmaker, and thank you thank you for making a film that tells the trans narrative in a brilliant hilarious way....without making the film about the trans narrative. This film is revolutionary in so many ways.

Hi,
Saw the film last night @ the Castro. What an amazing film, extremely touching for me. Although our stories aren't quite the same, there are some similarities. Thank you so much Kim & all those involved w/making the film. I would love to get a copy of Prodigal Son's for friends & family to see; is there anywhere I could purchase a copy?
Thanks again & good luck w/your next film (olympian w/xy chromosomes).

What an amazing film, and what an amazing evening. Thank you Kim, for bringing the story of a family, your family, your individual struggle to be the best you can be, and your ability to love each other in the process to the screen. I am moved and proud to be your friend.
I'm also impressed as hell that you got this done. You rock.

Dennis Connors I watched about 25 films at Silverdocs. A friend said I can't leave until I see this film, so I did on Sunday morning, alas, on a computer. My last film at the festival, and it brought out the most tears. I think it was the power of the story telling that did it for me. Bravo.

Prodigal Sons We'll be screening in San Francisco on Wednesday 6/24: Frameline festival, Castro Theater, 7:30pm. Followed by Q&A with director Kimberly Reed and members of the family.

Kimberly,
I saw you movie last night at the AFI film festival in Silver Spring, MD. Not just the movie, but you, are moral standouts and help me see how best to live life. Thanks for answering my question last night about your Dad’s relationship with Mark. Here is my thumbnail critique:
While Prodigal Sons is extraordinary on a host of different levels -- all of which capture one’s heart, mind and soul – its most transcendent element the searing, yet kind and simple, ethics and personality of its filmmaker, Kimberly McKerrow Reed. Pursuing the circuitous and surprising path toward improving relations with her estranged and troubled brother, Ms. Reed’s sense of love for herself and others, unyielding moral compass and quiet firm compassion give us all a glimpse of true humanity. To aptly quote from the Bible, Ms. Reed is a “woman of valor”.
Please make more movies………..

I enjoyed the film tonight. Thanks. It reminds me that most feature films are now animations. Your film is real, about real beings learning how to live fully.
Blessings.

Jorge S. Arango Your film is a miracle. I can't stop thinking about it and the many, many issues it covers. Bravo! And again, as I told you at the Jacob Burns Center, you and your family have amazing courage. You are an inspiration.

Shirley Sprenger Lange I want to buy a DVD - how and where? Marc's parents were my close friends in Tacoma, WA......and I went to Spokane to see Marc a few years back right after his bio-mother died.

Gigi Nashville Hi Kimberly, Count me as a fan. You & I met at the NASHVILLE FILM FESTIVAL mixer @the Treehouse. Love your film, admire your courage, & can't wait to see what's next! You're an inspiration to those of us who have a story to tell & just need a nudge of encouragement to take us to the next level of what's possible on the other side of film completion.
I have a lot of theories about mental illness, but suffice to say, DIET plays a huge role in controlling the negative aspects of it. If only people would submit to allergy testing, & then adhere to a diet that honors the allergies, positive results would be realized.
Additionally, my belief is that Western medicine, and all its trappings, only contribute to worsening the condition by prescribing ridiculous pharmaceuticals. The answer is in Eastern philosophical approaches. Also, if one does not follow their bliss in life & succumbs to the materialistic and/or corporate junk, they may be headed for a schizophrenic crackup!
