LANL Researchers Blow Up Building with Civil War-like Cannon
23 Dec 2009, 1:14 pm

250790_cannon Nope, that's not a headline from The Onion. POGO has just learned that researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory accidentally blew a building apart a few weeks ago with a massive gun that acts like a Civil War cannon. From our press release:

According to a Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Occurrence Report, "Shock and Detonation Physics Group researchers heard a loud unusual noise from Technical Area 15, Building 562 after firing a shot from a large-bore powder gun (LBPG)." The researchers accidentally blew a building apart at Technical Area-15, on December 16, 2009 while testing a gun which acts like a Civil War cannon.

While no one was hurt, sources advise POGO that there was over $3 million in damage to property. The explosion blew the doors off the building -- which is described in the report as, "two doors were propelled off the facility."

The Facility Operations Director "declared a management concern due to the significant facility structural damage incurred resultant of the shot." Parts of the cannon were found outside the building.

"I must say that this is a new twist in the long history of screw-ups by Los Alamos," said POGO's Senior Investigator, Peter Stockton. “I have no idea in the world why they have a gun like this, let alone testing it.”

To learn more about this long history of screw-ups, check out POGO's LANL investigations. Of course, our past investigations have been concerned about security threats to the nuclear labs coming from outsiders.

Causes

In an effort to make government oversight a little more collaborative (and fun!), POGO is organizing a new Muckrakers Happy Hour. We hope you can join us again on Wednesday August 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. at Johnny's Half Shell (400 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, D.C.).

Because wouldn't it be nice if there was a place where reporters, NGO do-gooders, and Hill staffers from both sides of the aisle could go once a month to meet each other, share a few drinks, and exchange tips on their latest investigations?

No need to RSVP--just mention at the door that you're there for the Muckrakers Happy Hour, and somebody will point you in the right direction. Appetizers will be provided, and you can take advantage of Happy Hour drink prices.

Depending on this week's turnout, we'll see if we should make this our regular monthly spot. Stay tuned for details.

Please forward this to your colleagues, your own lists, or to anybody who you think might be interested in hanging out.

Hope to see you on Wednesday!
The Senate voted today 58-40 for the Levin-McCain amendment to remove F-22 funding from the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act.

Thanks to all of you who took action and contacted your senators!

The Senate's historic bipartisan vote to eliminate funding for the F-22 is a game changer. This landmark vote marks the end of business as usual, and the beginning of real reform in Washington. We trust the House will support Secretary Gates operational plans to meet future military challenges with sound planning and prudent budget choices. We hope throughout the conference and appropriations process that the House will also choose to support the priorities of two secretaries of Defense, two Presidents, three chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the current secretary and chief of staff of the Air Force to stop buying F-22s.
A message from Danielle:

TODAY, I need each of you to call 202-224-3121, ask for your Senators, & tell them you are a constituent who demands they stop the military-industrial-complex and honor our troops and taxpayers. Vote YES on McCain/Levin.

Last week I asked you to contact your Senators, but the fight is not yet won. Thanks to your emails and calls, the vote is expected to be extremely close.

We hear the vote might happen as early as this afternoon, so if you haven’t yet, please take a moment to contact your Senators and tell them to vote YES on the Levin-McCain amendment.

Tell them you support the recommendations of two secretaries of Defense, two Presidents, three chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the current secretary and chief of staff of the Air Force, and at least 20 editorial pages across the country to stop buying F-22s. Urge them to keep the funds in programs that will help our troops, rather than wasting our taxpayer dollars on a fighter jet that the Pentagon doesn’t even want. And remind them that buying more F-22s means choosing a corrupt procurement system over our national security needs.

We've found over the past week that our meetings and calls with Senate offices are making a big difference. It's letting Senators know that we're paying attention and care deeply about this vote. As Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently said, "If we can’t get this right, what on earth can we get right? It is time to draw the line on doing defense business as usual."

For all the latest F-22 news, be sure to check our Twitter feeds and the POGO blog.

Thanks for all your help!
