I am apparently to be released quite soon. 7-15 It's not easy to have tons of self-esteem in prison, so you're constantly looking for diversions and distractions. Killing time...

Preview: Slacker Bliss! November 11, 2008 By Ray Pride
RECOMMENDED
With the availability of inexpensive equipment, younger filmmakers have been
looking for a way around the old ways of getting films seen. When Columbia,
Missouri-based Todd Sklar¹s self-distributed ³Box Elder² played Siskel this
spring, I nominated it to be the first ³mumblebumstumblecore² comedy, a
variation on both ³Slacker² and Preston Sturges¹ ³Sullivan¹s Travel.
And on Sunday, Robert Byington¹s ³RSO,² aka ³Registered Sex
Offender,² is a bracing black comedy, the central character of which is a
just-paroled sex offender who may just be beyond redemption. It¹s a fecund
jaw-dropper, with roles for directors Andrew Bujalski, Richard Linklater and
Caveh Zahedi. Byington and actors Kristen Tucker and Kevin Corrigan will
appear. DIY not?

In the parole office waiting room today a flamboyantly dressed black woman asked everyone who came in and everyone who was leaving if they had a car. She changed the word she used for 'car' for each person I heard her address, so she used words like "wheels, ride, mobile" --it was as if she didn't want the others whom she'd addressed to see any of her repetitions as cliched. She said to one: "You gots mobility?" She seemed to have a healthy fear of cliche. I heard Federico Fellini changed his answers to questions in interviews for the same reason. In a way the flamboyantly dressed, ride soliciting black woman was taking a page out of Fellini's book.
In much the same fashion, when people ask me what I did to attain my status as a registered sex offender, I am often compelled to play fast and loose with the truth. I often say the first thing that comes into my head.

The counselor tells us not to be too hard on ourselves. A guy in the back says "hard on" and then there's a lot of Beavis and Butthead laughter. A feeling of depression cascades from my head to my heart, a wave washing and slapping. The counselor is a black man and I immediately wonder a bunch of things about his personal life, what his room looks like --it's a heartbreaking invasion of privacy, to even wonderr these things. I got lost in the black hair care area of a pharmacy in Des Moines, Iowa once.

Sometimes I guess I get a little disappointed --there aren't a lot of shining examples in here. My cell mate Simmons is OK, but still he's a little off. There was a guy in here when I arrived, but he didn't say anything for three days and I woke up one morning and he was gone. I try not to read too much in to anything.
You get so you want to see one pretty girl in person, even if you are a homo.

Simmons tells me he had a decent job on the outside, but that he got mixed up with some drugs, specifically, he says, a backpack with a five pound zip lock baggie of cocaine in it. He whistles softly and shakes his head, then asks me what I did, but I pretend I'm asleep. After a few moments he says, into the silence: "OK then, all-righty."
5-27
A fellow inmate stops me in the hall and says "you're getting cuter every day, when are we having dinner." It seems an odd thing to say, and I'm not sure he knows he's in prison.

Some days it's so sad in here you're lucky to have --I think I have an internal switch to prevent too much information from coming in. They did have a movie tonight in the rec room, somebody's idea of a joke I guess. It was called Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Whoever made it had kind of a bleak outlook --the main character carried a dead guy's head in a bag through most of the movie. And shot about twenty people in the process, but he wasn't really a tough guy, he just stumbled into it. Very bleak outlook. The main character wore these stupid sunglasses through most of the movie, then seemed to forget he had them on for a couple days, then he reappeared again. That can make you like a movie even more sometimes, but in this case I'm not sure.

Counseling today, also my Dad's birthday. I thought he might visit, but then why would you want to visit your son in jail on your birthday. The counselor tried to get us to talk about our childhoods --that was the theme today. There were a lot of lengthy silences. Sturdy, durable silences. The usual windbags came up short on this topic, for some reason.

People on the outside have preconceived notions about prisons being sordid rape orgies, and terrifying for someone like me. Not so --mostly what it is is boring a lot of the time. And zero privacy. The occasional threatening situation is kind of enlivening. And if you get cornered it's not like it's permanent. Lomotil is in high demand here. But this prison isn't like some I've heard about. It's more that a lot of the guys here are just kind of depressed. Not that we should all be singing and dancing.

I talked to Tina on the phone. She said her brother Craig Victor was going trick or treating, despite the fact he's 34 years old. He likes candy, he says, and plans to tell people his costume is that of an older person. He's not going to win any contests. It's my understanding that some of the Registered Sex Offenders have to go door to door in certain counties --you're supposed to say you're a sex offender but you don't have to say what you did. It's an odd thing to have to do, a kind of justice that feels a little outdated. It might be fun to dress up as a sex offender on halloween and go trick or treating. I don't know too many people who'd have a sense of humor about that, except in theory. It hasn't really crossed my mind, that some of these guys would be embarrassed to be sex offenders. I guess I'm not that embarrassed. Nor do I guess I know how sex offenders dress.
