Rainforest Rescue International Ever seen a rose in a jungle?

If the Ceylon Rose butterfly could speak, it would be telling us to tread carefully through the jungle. It’s an important message, because this butterfly only makes its home in Sri Lanka’s undisturbed rainforests. ...

Rainforest Rescue International Sri Lanka is one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots. But despite its rich and diverse natural heritage, human interventions over the past 150 years have severely affected wildlife habitat and damaged natural systems. Take a journey through time and explore the changes in the natural world, both in Sri Lanka and the ...world, and what the future might hold for us…

The salon will be held at 7PM ON SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST 2009, FOLLOWED BY A TOUR ON SUNDAY MORNING to Kanneliya rainforest.

The tour to the Kanneliya Rainforest will leave at 7.00am from Amangalla on Sunday 30th August. The cost is Rs 2,500 per person. This includes the transport to and from Kanneliya, guided trails, leech socks and lunch. Numbers are limited so please book now!

A little more info on our speaker, Charith Senanayake:

“After attending Latrobe University in Melbourne and studying microbiology, Charith decided to leave research behind and apply his knowledge to the real world. Using the experiences gained from running a sustainable products business in Melbourne, Australia, he arrived in Sri Lanka in 2004 to help develop and diversify organic agriculture in the country. As a global biodiversity hot-spot, and one of the world’s most populated countries, it was here Charith saw how important it was to strengthen the link between community and the natural world to conserve the earth’s magnificent biodiversity

Beginning as a volunteer with Rainforest Rescue International in 2005, before taking on the role of CEO, he became involved in many biodiversity conservation initiatives such as the development of a rainforest corridor between the Singharaja and Kanneliya forests. Now one of Sri Lanka’s most active environmental organisations, Rainforest Rescue International works in 6 districts and focuses on protecting vulnerable environments through ecosystem restoration, development of sustainable livelihoods, climate change mitigation, education and research.

From these experiences, Charith believes that empowering communities to manage their local ecosystems is the most important key to protecting and conserving Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
