For several decades, many Americans considered eugenics “the science of good birth,” and laws were passed in more than 30 states to mandate surgical sterilization of people considered hereditarily “unfit.” Professor Lombardo has written and lectured about the origins of the eugenics movement for more than 25 years, bot...h in the U.S and internationally. The focus of this talk will be the relevance of eugenics history to the ethics of research, with a discussion of how we should think about the role of scientists in light of this disturbing history. Dr. Lombardo's visit is hosted by The Graduate School with funding from the National Institutes of Health-Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD) Program.
