North Carolina State Parks and Recreation The state parks will be open throughout the Thanksgiving weekend. That's good to know if you need to walk off a holiday dinner or need to decompress from the shopping mania.

North Carolina State Parks and Recreation Flat Stanley, the children's book character that students often send on journeys via mail or email, visited Falls Lake State Recreation Area recently. Park staff allowed him to dress as a ranger for the day and even gave him his own radio. He learned a lot about the park's history and natural resources.

Toys for Tots benefits from a unique program at Hammocks Beach State Park. Our visitors bring a new, unwrapped toy to brighten a child's holiday and, in turn, enjoy a 90-minute cruise through the coastal marsh narrated by park rangers. Over 5 years, we've collected hundreds of toys and folks have learned about this imp...ortant coastal habitat. Tours are Wed., Thurs. and Sat. Reservations by calling the park office 910-326-4881./Ranger Renee ThomczakRead More

North Carolina State Parks and Recreation When it comes to glorious fall color, most think of the mountain parks first. But, autumn is everywhere. Note this photo taken last week at Merchants Millpond State Park in northeastern North Carolina. This weekend should be a good one to take a hike and take in the autumn air at a state park nearby./Charlie Peek

There are American alligators at Merchants Millpond. As best we can determine, it's the northern extent of their range

North Carolina State Parks and Recreation About 150 friends and fans of Fort Macon State Park came to the dedication of the park's new Coastal Education and Visitor Center Saturday. At 22,547 square feet, it's one of the state parks system's largest facilities and architecturally, one of the most stunning. And, it's certified under the LEED program of the U.S. Green Building Council. Congrats to the Fort Macon staff./Charlie Peek

Thank you for being FB fans of North Carolina State Parks and Recreation. Though today's economy is challenging for both the public and private sectors, there are many positives and these are exciting times for our state park system. The visitation at state parks is at record levels this year. We've added many new ...areas and a number of new facilities in the parks, plus a new centralized reservation system is now in place. Dedications of the new visitor centers at Merchants Millpond and Fort Macon are scheduled for October 24 and October 31 respectively. Enjoy your parks -- the fall is great time to visit!
