Are you drinking and eating enough when you are on the course? I've just had someone come and talk to me about their morning round, he was really frustrated with how he has played the back 9 in his last 2 rounds. On both of his rounds he has got to the turn playing rea...lly well and then fails to keep his score going into the clubhouse, today he had 21 points on the front 9 and only 15 on the back 9, he has obviously got 36 points and played to his handicap, but knows that he should have got 40 points at least. My first question was similar to what I have just asked you, did you drink or eat anything on the course today? The reply was no! There is the reason why he struggles to get into the clubhouse with a good score. One fact that always sticks in my mind is that a 2% drop in hydration will result in a 30% in performance, exactly what my golfer has seen today. You need to be drinking at least 300ml of water every 3 holes to keep hydrated. You should also consider what you are eating and when you are eating it. On the golf course we need to keep energy levels up, as we can be out there for almost 5 hours these days. You need to be eating a slow release food early on in your round, this can normally be in the form of a banana on the 5th or 6th hole, this will slowly give you energy for most of the round. Once you get to the 14th hole and start to feel fatigued you then need to eat a fast release food, something that will give you a quick burst of energy and get you into the clubhouse, a mars bar is always good. So next time you are playing, make sure you have plenty of water, a piece of fruit and a chocolate bar. Continuously drink the water all the way round, have the fruit after just a few holes and then have the chocolate bar as you come down the home stretch. This will give you the best opportunity of matching your 21 points on the front 9 with another 21 on the back 9!
