Tomorrow Never Comes:
How making “tomorrow” today changed my body and my life

I know something that many other personal trainers do not.

I didn’t learn it in school; I didn’t learn it at a workshop. It helps me be a better trainer, a passionate instructor, and a more understanding person.

My “something” is both simple and powerful: I know what it feels like to be fat, out of shape, and unable to tie my shoes.

As a teenager and young adult I was not fat. Yes, I did have some “heavier” times, depending on my stress level. I exercised a lot: biked to school/work, exercised at the gym, walked everywhere. So my taking comfort in food didn’t show – I worked off whatever I ate. At 19 I also began teaching group exercise classes, which I did for many years. But despite my teaching, the excess calories began to show. I was 5’1” and 164 pounds by the time I was 26 years old.

Every day I would wait for “tomorrow” to start my diet. I had started and failed hundreds, if not thousands, of times. And every tomorrow would become another tomorrow. And another. So the weight kept piling on. I stopped exercising. By the time my father became terminally ill with cancer in April of 2003 I weighed 184 pounds. The next four months, as I cared for him, food kept me going and made me feel comforted. When my father passed away that August I was 198 pounds, my highest weight ever.

You wake up feeling ill: Head hurting, stomach squirrely, tired, and thirsty. You know you shouldn’t have done it, but you did anyway. You pop some pain killers, drink a gallon of water, and swear you won’t ever do it again. But you will - in less than a month. An...

Real World Weight Loss FDA is working on ideas to require food manufacturers to put nutritional information on the front side so people can make better decisions while shopping (because you know - turning a box around is so difficult). This will be a great tool for consumers. My idea? Put information on BOTH sides. That way, I can't turn the... box around when I am eating something I shouldn't!

Real World Weight Loss As they are in the middle of a facelift at my club, I decided to do an artist's rendition of how I think the entry to the spin room should look....a little Spinning, a little chocolate, a little SpinQueen, and life will be good.

Real World Weight Loss Just found: new sweetner called Sun Crysals. 5 calories/1gm carbohydrate per serving. A blend of pure cain sugar (i.e. table sugar) and Stevia, a natural plant that sweetens food with no effect on blood sugar levels. The combo of sugar and Stevia makes it low enough to qualify as a "free" food for diabetics (up to 3 pa...ckets). No pink stuff. No blue stuff. No yellow stuff. All natural white stuff. Will order a sample for taste and report back. Of if you've trired it, let us know.

Real World Weight Loss Green tea may strengthen bones. Green tea may weaken bones. What? According to the Chinese University, an ingredient in green tea can help bone cells grow and block the destruction of bone minerals. Researchers at Oregon State University say too much green tea may actually weaken your bones. Which is right? No one kno...ws for sure. But overall, the health benefits of green tea may negate the negative ones. Party on.

Real World Weight Loss The keys to sticking with an exercise program? 1) Find something you love. 2) Do it consistently. 3) Form a social network so you have yet ANOTHER reason to stay with it. 4) Schedule a long-term goal (love to run? Commit to a charity 5K and train towards that. Like to Spin? Get a bike and work towards an outdoor group ...ride. Swimming is your thing? Swim your way to a mini-triathlon). Train with passion.

Real World Weight Loss Vitamins/minerals: Did you know that “percent daily values” on food labels are based on a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet? Harvard Health teaches us to get the most nutrition we can through what we eat, no matter how many calories we need. Flax seeds, anyone?
