Have you seen the new FRANK cannabis adverts on TV? To coincide with cannabis reclassification the government has spent a fortune on these new ads. What do you think of them?
At the same time, the government has stated it will not follow the advice of the ACMD, it will not be reclassifying ecstasy, but instead will keep it in Class A - the same class as heroin and crack.
Have you been arrested for possession of ecstasy in the past few days? If so, please get in touch with us.

Release
Cannabis reclassification is just days away - 26th January and cannabis is once again a Class B drug. What this actually means for people caught in possession is still a bit unclear, but it looks certain to include a Penalty Notice for Disorder (PND) of £80 for a second or third offence. The Daily Mail (14th January), who Gordon Brown was hoping to impress with his 'tough' stance on drugs, seem to think this means cannabis users get off lightly with 'just' an £80 fine and accuse him of being 'soft' on drugs.
Those most likely to be found on the streets with a joint are the young and/or poor, and to them £80 is a lot of money and a totally disproportionate fine.
However, at Release, we are thrilled that the government has succeeded in pleasing no-one on this issue, and may in future learn to listen to its expert advisers. We live in hope.

Release
Happy New Year Release Fans.
What are your new year's resolutions? What should the government's be?
Perhaps in 2009, we will see more people given help and treatment for their addictions, fewer women being incarcerated for drugs offenses, more safe paraphernalia distributed at drug projects and more people infected with Hepatitis C receiving the treatment they need and deserve.
Perhaps we shall. Either way, Release will be on the side of the tens of thousands of occasional drug users and thousands of problem drug users in the UK, and we shall be fighting for their human rights throughout 2009.

CANNABIS WILL GO BACK TO CLASS B. We are sorry to report that the reclassification of cannabis was approved by MPs yesterday. Only 54 MPs had the courage to oppose this move, compared to the 430 MPs who still believe that criminalising young people for smoking weed is a good idea.
It seems that the Liberal Democrats are the only party with some sense on this issue, with Nick Clegg, Chris Huhne, Vince Cable and other leading Lib Dems voting against it. Find out what your MP did here - http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa /cm200708/cmhansrd/cm081112/debtext/8111 2-0027.htm#column_925
