It’s fair to say that most people leave their sexuality at the door when they go to worship. Organized religion and sex have had an uneasy relationship. Generally, religion has either ignored human sexuality, treated it with suspicion or discomfort, or made people feel guilty about it.

The federal government has wasted the past eight years and over $1.3 billion on abstinence-only programs which do not work and jeopardize the lives and futures of our young people by denying them scientifically sound information about methods of contraception.

...On Friday afternoon, the House Appropriations Committee beat back an effort to continue funding to the Community Based Abstinence Education Program (CBAE). As you know, President Obama has called for the elimination of abstinence-only funding, and the FY 2010 Labor/HHS/Education Appropriations bill being considered ...by the committee followed his lead. That led to a Republican amendment, proposed by Reps. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) and Zach Wamp (R-TN), to restore funding to the discredited program. The amendment was defeated 24-35.
And late last night, the House Energy and Commerce Committee defeated a similar amendment to the Health Care Reform Bill by a vote of 26-29. That amendment, which was offered by Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) would have re-authorized the Title V abstinence-only program, which was intentionally allowed to expire earlier this year....

RCRC extends our deepest sympathy and our prayers to the family of Dr. George Tiller, who was assassinated this morning in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas, where he was a member of the congregation. Dr. Tiller was a person of conscience and faith, who provided abortion services for women in ...the greatest medical need despite frequent threats, lawsuits and violence. While we do not know at this time if the murder of Dr. Tiller was religiously motivated, the fact that the murder took place in his church reminds us that some people use religion as an excuse for acts of hatred. Let us remember that violence and murder are perversions of religion, and let us - as people of faith and conscience who respect women as moral agents - speak out forcefully and unambiguously against those who foment hatred by their words.
