Respect the Land in Alberta There is a garbage cleanup in the Wapiti Sand Dunes, near Grande Prairie this weekend. The cleanup in the popular recreational area runs this Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The meeting site is at the east side of Resources Road, across from the entrance to the Wapiti Sand Dunes. There will be a free BBQ lunch for volunteers. Come help us keep the area a safe and enjoyable place to play.

Hi everyone,
Please use extreme caution when driving or walking on ice this winter. Ensure ice is 10 centimetres thick for walking and 30 centimetres for driving. Respect the Land in Alberta
Welcome to the Respect the Land Facebook page.
This site is provided by the Government of Alberta and is meant to help spread the word about the importance of respecting Alberta's public lands.
With the May long weekend almost upon us and the expectation that thousands of people will be out enjoying the outdoors, this site not only aims to educate and inform Albertans about responsible behaviour on the land, but also encourage stewardship and conservation.
Some quick rules:
Respect the Land feedback only.
No personal attacks. It is OK to disagree with a position on an issue. It is not OK to question the other person's character.
No abusive comments or foul language. In particular, malicious responses that insult others based on race, gender, nationality or sexual orientation will not be tolerated.
The bottom line: We want to encourage thoughtful and intelligent discussion. But the unwritten rules of decorum and civility still apply.

We thought you would find this interesting...
On the May long weekend (2008), SRD staff completed close to 9,500 compliance checks (both for campers and OHV users). The Government of Alberta and its partners issued almost 1,400 tickets and warnings.

Hi everyone,
Please note that we have issued a wet weather advisory for southern Alberta. Because of the recent heavy rains, SRD is recommending that recreational users in general and OHV users in particular stay away from the area because the saturated, rain-soaked soils are very fragile. Much of the hard work done by volunteers could easily be undone by using motorized vehicles in these areas. Attached is a link to the information bulletin...

Respect the Land in Alberta Thanks for your post Kyle. We agree that most people do listen if they are spoken to decently. We know people want to have fun, but we expect them to be responsible and courteous. What we are trying to do is prevent problems from happening in the first place. It really is important to pack out all trash - last May long weekend, there were over 3,250 bags of garbage left behind. The trash filled over 30 dumpsters. Some people even abandoned vehicles and furniture on public land. We don't believe it's hypocritical to ask that everyone packs out what they pack in. We hope you have a fun and safe long weekend.

Wildfires often start due to accidental ignitions. About 40 per cent of all wildfires are caused by human activity.
That’s why the Government of Alberta has developed information for Albertans about being Firesmart.
The Firesmart manual for homes and cottages is available for download on the SRD website.
The manual contains important information for Albertans about how to reduce the risk of wildfires to their property and communities.
It’s important that burn barrels and fire pits be located away from buildings and other combustible material.
Also, always ensure your campfire is completely extinguished. Soak it, stir it, soak it again. If there is any heat, your fire is not out!

Respect the Land in Alberta Hats off to all the volunteers who helped pack out nearly 77 metric tonnes (168,000 pounds) of garbage from the Wapiti Sand Dunes last weekend. More than 80 volunteers combed the area and hauled out freezers, mattresses, clothes and recyclables. Thanks to all the groups who helped make this event a success. Pictures will be posted shortly.
