Rick Davis The St. Andrews Dinner in Dalton was fun. Good food, good company, good music. At least those of us playing didn't have to compete with teh rock band in the next room. They went on as we were ending the dinner, after all the music, but the bagpipes playing Scotland the Brave, against which they had no chance! ;-) ...Thanks to the Scottish Society of NW GA for having us all.

Rick Davis This week only, the Main Street Farmers' Market will be on Tuesday from 4-6PM so those of you Chattanoogans travelling for Thanksgiving can get food before you leave on Wednesday. I will be playing music, depending on the weather (temp & precip). But you don't have to stay out there two hours to get your great food for Thanksgiving, so come on out.

Today, I performed at Battle Academy, our neighborhood Elementary School for their Medieval / Renaissance Festival. That tall structure in front of which I am playing is a water tower.

Rick Davis Just went over the tunes for a half-hour gig, and didn't get through my list in a 1/2 hour, so that's good. It's always better to have more than enough ready! :-)

Donna Jean Glasgow Well, I've died many times over. All musicians have to be willing to die once in a while and know that it's not the end of the world. Performing is not for the faint of heart!

Dick, ewe still funny! I was too cheap to get the shirt. As for death (what a polarity that exists in this conversation), I just figure it's like birth in reverse and I won't remember any of it.

Yes, interesting turn of conversation - and all from a simple word - plainsong!

Thank you for humoring me! I should have at least Googled it before I dared to comment so I could have sounded smarter. ;-) While I certainly would LIKE to remember every thing I ever learned about music history, thanks to Google and Wikipedia, nowadays I don't have to! Just in time for old age! Hah! So now I read where the polyphony didn't... See More come along until later, after plainsong. So today, I am a little more knowledgeable than I was yesterday; maybe I will remember it this time! In any case, it sounds like you do fun and interesting things.

Yesterday I was called upon to fill in on a ten-piano concert next Saturday night that the Springdale music teachers' club is presenting. I said "yes" before I got the music. What was I thinking? It's full of double-octave scales, 32nd-note arpeggios, and chromatic scales in thirds. Five piano teachers on primo, five on secondo. "The Stars and Stripes" and "Joy to the World." It will be challenging, for sure--and fun, I think!

Hmmm. That's a LOT of notes! Unless the piece is taken like a lot of Bach's pieces with 32nd notes in them - very slow. At least you have 10 fingers with which to do all that. ;-)

Yeah, I always want to see the music before I say yes. Once I accepted a gig playing some Malcolm Dalglish pieces with choir. I died out there. The good news, is ... See Morethat once you've died, you can't die again. ;-)

Well, all that on Plainsong wasn't from memory from long ago. Not so many years ago, I did some reading on chant, and thought I remembered it progressed from melody only to open parallel fifths to open parallel fifths and fourths to closer harmonies. So,l I looked it up, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the tune I'm doing was melody only "in the day". So, don't feel too badly, Cuz. ;-)
