Casefile Clues issue off to be proofed...

Casefile Clues

Casefile Clues Nothing fancy, but to help organize some land transactions in an index, I color coded them. http://www.casefileclues.com/2009/11/grouping-those-transactions.html

I'm usually not one to use highlighters to organize, but this time I made an exception. I had an index showing several transactions on a lot in Chicago for Elizabeth and Thomas Frame.

Casefile Clues This week's column discusses my initial groundwork in hiring someone to help with my Frame-Apgar-DeMar problem in Chicago, including a few of the mistakes I made along the way (of course, they were done for illustration purposes.....)

Casefile Clues Initial deadline for my annual group Salt Lake City Research trip is fast approaching http://www.rootdig.com/slctrip.html

Casefile Clues

Casefile Clues Have all the deeds where Barbara (from last week's "Barbara's Lots") obtained her property and where her daughter who bought out the heirs sold it. Now to compare all those legal descriptions. Also have a complete copy of the survey plat. Tax records are located in another location and are on my "to do" list.

Interesting that the legal description on the deeds is in metes and bounds (pretty much) which is not what is on the estate inventory for Barbara and not what is in the quitclaim deeds signed by the heirs.

Casefile Clues is Michael John Neill's weekly how-to genealogy column. Casefile Clues is not copied and pasted text from other articles or press-releases. Rather, it is fresh material drawn from Michael's own research experiences in nearly twenty states and seven foreign countries. ...

Thanks, Tina! I really appreciate it. It reminded me that I was going to follow up on the employer of the passport applicant in that article. There's a reasonable chance he was related to the VP of the company he worked for (Haskell and Barker Car Company).

I love the fact you never know where a research project might lead you and what you might learn from it. always a new challenge!

Casefile Clues Readers--one question: The initial research survey for the Frame-Apgar-DeMar problem indicated the mother (when her husband was alive) appears to be the purchaser of real estate (and the lead name on the mortgage). Is there interest in finding out "why?" It's not a part of my original "plan," but I'll modify if there's interest in trying to see what was going on there.

See, that's me, too... Gotta know the why's of things, else it's just a collection of names, life events and dates. It's like bringing that person more to life for myself... :)

I'm leaning towards adding this to my list. Another problem is that I need to get into the directories and see where this family was living before the wife purchased the home in Chicago in the mid 1890s.

Casefile Clues Researcher working with me on the Frame-Apgar-DeMar problem are close to finalizing just what we're going to have her research for me. Part of the problem is staying focused on the goal (and my budget). Her initial survey revealed some interesting things about the mother that really won't help me tie the son to the parents more concretely or tell me where the son was after 1918. One has to stay focused.....

Holly is right about "interesting" things and side roads. Rondina is right about the budget, too and that's not unlimited. It's different when a problem is "local" and I can spend as much time as I can manage on it.I may decide to hold off on the "interesting" thing until I get the other problem solved. The "interesting" thing coincides with my belief (from English records) that the mother's family was of a different social class than the father.

Casefile Clues My researcher helping me with the Frame-Apgar-DeMar problem was doing a preliminary search and discovered a death certificate recorded in a book of what are apparently "miscellenous" recordings in the Recorder's Office. We were hoping for name change for William Frame Apgar and instead found duplicate copy of a brother's death cert. Never know what they will record in those miscellaneous volumes.

Next time I think I need to abbreviate miscellaneous--it's easier than spelling it.

Casefile Clues Was just reading through the receipts of the Barbara Haase estate (looking for signatures to post on my blog) and discovered that the property tax receipt has a different description of Barbara's property than does the inventory and the quitclaim deeds. Just the east half of the south 2/3 of block ten--DARN.
