I'm enjoying Art from the Arctic, Inuit Prints and Sculpture, on view in the Lockhart Gallery through February 14th. What particularly impresses me is how early MAG collected Inuit art. Several of the sculptures were added to the collection as early as 1955.
The first cooperative on Baffin Island was established in ...1959, the year of the 1st collection of Cape Dorset prints. Traditional sculpture of course pre-dates printmaking among the Inuit since that was encouraged through contact with the South. Our Hunter and Seal, acquired in 1957, is a lovely example.

Arts of Africa, Oceania and Native North America
An intriguing new reinstallation on the Gallery's first floor explores the cultures of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
Traditions and Encounters brings together objects created for both ceremonial and everyday use. Across cultures, these divers...e works share common themes—masquerade, body modification, transformation, use of pattern, rites of passage and human relationships to the natural world. Bridging past and present, their makers often infuse the cultural traditions of their ancestors with references to contemporary society.
Related programs include an educators' inservice (November 18) and Dr. David Anderson's Origin of Life on Earth (November 22),
