Roger Shealy REAL ID comes to Florida..., along with a 140% increase in the renewal tax. My renewal is due next month and I received a nice reminder from the State informing me of all the documentation I must bring.

Need to renew or update the information on your driver's license? It'll be a lot harder if you wait until after Dec. 31.

So long as we cave in individually & surrender our right to drive (travel) they have power over us by law enforcers with guns.. We could collectively boycott the DMV. It would be nice to have some Law enforcers join us for once tho who refuse to support tyrannical law..Hello Sheriff Parker?? you there??

Tom Leser  Great article by Roger Shealy. What astounds me is the expense-to-revenue ratio here, and I hardly consider "Non-Operating Revenue" TRUE revenue since it is tantamount to theft, but even with these taxpayer subsidies this commuter rail line is so far in the hole. FY2008 alone Tri-Rail brought in $9 Million from tick...et sales and advertising, and the total operating expenses was 10x this cost! To truly justify rail, prices would have to therefore be 10x what they're charging now and I highly doubt that this is price equilibrium. This is what happens when government tries to provide ANY type of service.

What you dont see is that the most expensive one day use ticket from end to end is only about $9.00 round trip. thats right, you can travel 78 miles both ways for only $9.00. Thats a hugh amount in savings compared to the cost of driving a car from West Palm to Miami and back, especially if you do it everyday. On top of that, there are tickets that... See More are sold at discounted prices that will give you even more useage with a good amount of savings over buying a regular one day use ticket. The main problem is that the trains is far away from pretty much everything there is to see and do in South Florida. I mean, you can take it to get anywhere, but you will need to use several busses most likely or a cab, which will kill your savings anyway. its only good for those who live at one end and work in the other. And even then, alot of people pass it up. Its not reliable, they have frequent break downs, accident delays, other trains cause delays, and so on and so on. I really really do wish they woudl just shut the POS system down all together.

Cheyne, thanks for the first hand account. We'll see if Central Florida learns anything from Tri-Rail. You are absolutely correct regarding the fee schedule and as far as the layout, both run north-south, are roughly the same distance, and along an interstate highway. Ritch was highly critical of the lack of east-west rail of the Tri-Rail system and blamed much of lackluster performance on that weakness, yet here we are, implementing a very similar layout for Sunrail

Roger Shealy "Over and over again, state lawmakers said federal officials told the state that it "needs to get its act together'' on commuter rail. The feds, though, haven't promised the money. But federal officials did threaten to take back about $256 million in federal money for Tri-Rail if it cut back on services due to budget cuts."

You read that correctly, "the feds have not promised the money", but they did threaten to take some if we didn't bailout Tri-Rail!
