My problem with describing it as a bomb is that the word carries very weighty connotations, ones that aren't really accurate with what NASA is doing here. It's a kinetic energy missile, lacks a propulsion system, and, doesn't culminate in a brilliant explosion that ruins lives.

And I definitely agree that there's an excessive amount of hubris here - India engaged in a similar project in 2008 with a lunar probe intended to pore the landscape in search of water ice, but they didn't use an excessively large craft to do so. It reflects poorly on us all. Leave it to America to be the forerunner in excess.
