We are building a marble top kitchen island for a client who lives on a farm. She raises goats and chickens and wanted some form of representation of her farm on her island. She fell in love with a chicken bank that I have. I made a half body cast so I could replicate half the chicken and mount it between the two fro...nt drawers of the piece. Here is a photo esay of the casting process. As the woodworking part of the build progresses, I will post the photos.Read More

Bruce Webster Nice to see Staples on FaceBook. It's been w-a-y too long since our last visit to the store. The "Stapelized" mill table continues to be a major conversation in the house.

Jessica Beautiful things! I found you on a good search as I found the base to the drafting table on your home page today when out thrifting. How did you attach the top? I'm of to salvage to find one. Thanks! Jessica

"Thrifting" is thrift store shopping. You would be amazed the number of antiques that make it to the thrift store...well, I am. :)

Thank you. The site is very helpful. Cheers.

I am a big fan of your work. I was hoping you wouldn't mind giving me some advice. I am building a kitchen table out of reclaimed walnut and was curious to know what you felt would be the best way to finish this table. Protection and durability is key, but I would prefer to keep the gloss down. This wood has never ...been finished and is currently sanded down to 150 grit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Read More

Hi! Walnut is considered an oily wood, in fact when it is glued up it is recommended the joints be wiped with acetone. So to finish walnut an oil finish such as tongue oil works well and it does not get glossy unless you put on a high number of coats. Minwax also makes a product called antique oil that works well. For your final sanding, use an old worn piece of 150 by hand in the direction of the grain. Send me a photo, I would love to see the finished piece.

I will certainly send you a picture when done. Which will give me the most protection from water rings, or a spill of some kind, the Minwax product or the tongue oil? I'm not worried about dings or scratches, but stains wouldn't be any fun. Thanks again.

The Minwax product will give you the best of the two. For even greater protection minwax makes a wipe on poly that comes in gloss and semi gloss, this is what we use at our shop with great results. It was tested by Fine woodworking magazine and got the best award.

Marla My friend and I caught your segment mid-way through last night on Chronicle and were blown away by the beauty and strength of your tables. We said let's take a nice long ride asap to wherever you are thinking you must be in western or northern New England, only to find out this morning that you're next door in Plainville! I live in Wrentham and can't wait to visit your shop. Your work is amazing ....
