I agree with Gerry. I love the Mars Volta and i've seen them live three times now. The first time i saw them, they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and seemingly no-one there was into their performance. It just wasn't the right atmosphere for their music, which to many fans of the Chili Peppers is just noise.

The exact same thing happened at Sasquatch this year. There were thousands of people who came for several different groups and it is extremely unlikely that a large amount of those people came to see the Mars Volta perform. But, the second time i saw them play was in a small venue that held only a few hundred and they tore the roof off the place. Their sound was spot on and everyone there was into it.

I'm not about to get into a big debate about their music. I won't pretend that i am smarter than you because i "get" them. It either appeals to you or it doesn't, and that's fine. But, like Gerry, i feel they probably shouldn't have been at the festival.

I'm saying this as a MV fan - they didn't belong at that festival.

They especially didn't belong right after the Flight of the Conchords set. The vibe wasn't right, the music wasn't right. I enjoy the Mars Volta more at a Mars Volta concert, where everyone there is of the similar mindset to just trance out to the music (there are the moshers, but Jesus people, why are you moshing to this?)

The musicology and jazz snob in me has to disagree with Aaron's 'disorganized noise' comment, but I definitely don't think Sasquatch was the right venue for them, and it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

I didn't have a single problem with the festival. I just had a blast!

Sunday was AMAZING this year....anyone see the WMMF interview with booshmagazine? They mentioned Sasquatch!
