I use Propellerhead Reason a lot for a long while. It's what I started on and it is still good. I use it occasionally rewired into Ableton Live 7 now, with a bunch of VST plugs. In the past I've gone through SONAR3, ACID Pro (really cool for bouncing your own audio loops and the best for choppin, reversing, and generally screwing with audio really quickly, but the MIDI and audio routing features are pretty butt), and Cakewalk Project5 (pretty awesome for the price, easy to use, but missing some crucial advanced features that I found in Live).
FL Studio may be the best bang for the buck, and a lot of people like it, though I hate the "playlist" arrange style. Reason is still a great program that comes with a great set of sounds in the package, but its lack of expandability hurts it. I'd just use whichever you find easier to learn with. Neither is insufficient, especially for a novice starting out. You can always change over later, and its easier to learn your second DAW.
