Personal History from ilchi.com: Early Years Ilchi Lee was born in 1950 to a family of educators, months after the start of the Korean War. Even in his early youth, he was driven by questions about the true meaning of his existence. Dissatisfied with intellectual answers, he turned to training his body to gain a sense of centeredness and peace. In his early twenties, he became a senior master of the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. Later, he applied his undergraduate studies in clinical pathology and physical education toward the successful management of a physical health training center. Awakening Experience In spite of his early success, Ilchi Lee could not escape an unrelenting urge to discover the true meaning of his existence. In 1980, after becoming keenly interested in traditional Korean mind-body training methods, he spent 21 days alone in rigorous meditation training on Moak Mountain. As a result, he gained a deeper understanding of the traditional training and the profound impact it can have on one's body and mind. Believing that his experience could be used to benefit the health and well-being of humanity, he developed educational programs that incorporated both Eastern and Western knowledge of physical and mental training. Laying the Foundation After his awakening experience, Ilchi Lee’s first action was to teach traditional Korean mind-body exercises to a stroke survivor in a public park in Anyang, South Korea. This drew the attention of many others who soon participated. Within five years, his training was systematized as Dahnhak (Dahn Yoga), which focused on helping individuals improve their physical and mental health. This practice evolved to include a wide variety of meditative and brain-enhancement techniques, now collectively known as Brain Education. Ilchi Lee’s Brain Education programs are now offered in community-based centers, public schools, corporations, and many other settings. Currently, BE is available in over 1000 locations in South Korea, Japan, United States, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, and Russia, for which Lee serves as consultant. Sedona America Story As Brain Education evolved, Ilchi Lee realized the importance of sharing his techniques outside of Korea. Attracted to the powerful cultural diversity of the United States, he visited the country in 1995. Driving across the country, he discovered Sedona, Arizona, a land of extraordinary natural beauty and rich Native American cultural heritage. In Sedona’s scenic and sacred landscape, Ilchi Lee started guiding nature walks to share his philosophy and practices with visitors to Sedona. Soon thereafter, he founded the Sedona Mago Retreat Center (www.sedonamagoretreat.com) at Mago Garden, in the middle of a the beautiful Coconino National Forest. Some of the peace activities he’s engaged in to make his vision a reality: -- In 1997, he founded, with Neale Donald Walsh, the New Millennium Peace Foundation (NMPF), which is a non-governmental, independent organization. -- In 2000, Ilchi Lee was one of 50 pre-eminent spiritual leaders asked to speak at the United Nations World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders in New York. His opening prayer, the Prayer of Peace, presented a vision of peace that transcends religious, racial, and national boundaries. -- In 2001, he hosted the 1st Humanity Conference, in Seoul, with contributions by prominent speakers, including Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, environmental activist Maurice Strong, international journalist Seymour Topping, and spiritual author Neal Donald Walsch. There were 12,000 Participants. Many there signed the Declaration of Humanity to acknowledge the true nature and identity of humanity. -- In 2001, after the September 11 tragedies, Ilchi Lee sought to offer optimism to the American people. When airport closures prevented him from flying from Los Angeles to Boston for a lecture, he drove 48 hours non-stop rather than cancel the speech. He told the Boston program participants that the real war on terrorism for him could be won only within the mind, by not succumbing to disillusionment. -- As a result of one of the Boston lecture participants asking, “What can we do?” he created what is now called the Master Healer course, a program at the Sedona Mago Retreat Center that teaches participants how to heal themselves and the world. -- In 2003 he created the Power Brain Dance for Dae-Gu, South Korea to raise the low morale of the citizens. They were suffering from a long economic depression and a subway station fire that year that killed 200 people and injured 140. The Power Brain Dance is a set of fun movements that many people used in greeting one another. -- Oscar Ariaz Sanchez, Nobel Peace Laureate and President of Costa Rica, and Ilchi Lee have co-sponsored several conferences and projects to advance Brain Education and peacemaking activities. -- One of these, the International Brain HSP Olympiad (IHSPO) has been held every year since 2005. The Olympiad emphasizes the unlimited possibility of the brain and raises awareness that the brain is the key to bringing peace to humanity. The event is opened with the Brain Declaration, which defines the essential premises of Ilchi Lee’s brain philosophy. Starting in 2008, the Olympiad and its associated Brain Education Conference are being held at the United Nations. Read More
