There is only one long term solution to Climate Change: we, who consume more than our equal share of the world's non-renewable resources, must reduce our consumption and production patterns and have simpler, healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. There is an urgent need for action to both neutralize carbon emissions as well as reduce poverty on a large scale globally.
We believe that by creating sustainable livelihoods for the poor, it reduces poverty and improves living conditions in the developing world. Therefore, our aim is to invest in green business opportunities at the community level starting in two pilot countries in Asia, namely Sri Lanka and India.The binding of Green House Gases (GHG) by planting of fast growing rubber trees has an immediate effect, which continues until harvesting of the trees on maturity in 30 years and thereafter by new planting. It is estimated that the amount of GHG offsetting that 10 fast growing rubber trees can provide is equal to the yearly footprint (10 tons carbon) of an average person living in Europe or North America. Based on our learning experiences in Asia, we will expand our business to Africa (Ghana) and the Americas (Colombia).
We are creating an environment where local people can actively participate in an array of climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. These include carbon off-setting through planting rubber trees and other relevant activities, complimented by renewable energy technologies to support organic agriculture, fisheries, water harvesting and forestry on a sustainable level.

START and the CEE-HSG present the serial entrepreneur Dr. Johannes Ziegler. His presentation on trends and entrepreneurial spirit in the Silicon Valley will be followed by a workshop that focuses on business in the online community. The event is being held on Monday 23. February in room 10-U149 at 7 p.m. at the “Lehrpr...ovisorium.” You must register on www.startglobal.org prior to the event in order to secure attendance.
Dr. Ziegler is co-founder and CEO of Miaplaza Inc., a Silicon Valley start-up that provides feature-rich online platforms for Internet communities. Current projects Miaplaza Inc. are undertaking include miaplaza.com, miafiesta.com and alwaysicecream.com. Born in Germany Dr. Ziegler moved to the Silicon Valley in 1994 to concentrate on his PhD research at Stanford University. With his experiences from both McKinsey & Company’s high-tech management and his Stanford PhD research he co-founded the consulting company Synesis Inc. in 1997.
Depending on the audience the presentation will be held in either English or German. Emphasis will be placed on positive and negative aspects of the silicon valley, current trends in the entrepreneurial centre and influences of the financial crisis. After a short break those interested will be invited to attend a Workshop on the online community business featuring example of the three current Miaplaza projects miaplaza.com, miafiesta.com and always-icecream.com. Attendance of the workshop will be independent from the presentation.
