Healing InSight acupuncture | herbs | food therapy recommends eliminating all sugar and eating steel cut oats and grapefruit juice when you have a lot of phlegm.

Steel cut oats help to get rid of stickiness and phlegm in the body, whereas regular oatmeal and especially instant oatmeal create more. Steel cut oats have more fiber and are kind of nutty (think wild rice vs. white rice). Yum! I add fresh ginger and mango or chunky applesauce and cinnamon. Yes, cream and sugar negate the anti-phlegm ... See Moreproperties, Mom!

Quaker makes steel cut oats, look for a blue can by the oatmeal in any grocery store. Or buy in bulk for cheap at a co-op. You have to cook for 25 minutes, so make a pot-full one day and reheat the leftovers the rest of the week.

So my "quick-cook" steel cut oats from Trader Joes that cook in 8 minutes are not the same, eh? I actually like the texture of rolled oats more. The steel cut I have remind me too much of the Red Mill 7-grain hot cereal. I like that too, but it's nice to have some different breakfast options.
