The Artists' Quarter
Friday, November 20 - Saturday, Nov 21, Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth (8 pm, $30 & 10:30 pm, $25)
The remarkable Roy Haynes returns to the Artists’ Quarter for two nights only. The legendary drummer was described by “All About Jazz” as “more than just a fountain of youth; he is one of the true wonders of the jazz world.”... Thelonious Monk, the notoriously demanding genius, once described Haynes' drumming as “an eight ball right in the side pocket.” In a career spanning over 50 years, Roy Haynes continues to reside deep in that pocket – an innovative stylist who meshes mercurial intelligence with pure joy.
Critics and fans marvel at Haynes' top-of-his-game vitality; the only part of his incredible craft that is open to question is “how does he do it?” The answer is unbridled dedication to an art form he helped create – bit to mention carefully selected, fiercely creative and wildly talented collaborators who keep Roy challenged. Haynes' history is, well, historical. His hard-swinging style has led to residencies with giants including Lester Young, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Chick Corea, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy, Bird, Monk, Metheny, and on and on. (His 4-disc 2007 box set release on Dreyfus Records, A Life In Time, is as much the story of jazz as it is the story of Roy.) In addition to his pioneering be-bop sessions, Haynes is constantly moving forward. Haynes’ 2006 live release Whereas was recorded right here in St. Paul at the AQ. (Haynes and AQ owner Kenny Horst go way back, and Roy’s affection for the AQ plays out on the CD.) That release resulted in a Grammy nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo” He returns to the scene of that acclaimed recording with his original Fountain of Youth Band featuring Martin Bejerano (piano), Marcus Strickland (saxophone) and John Sullivan (bass).

Since 1978, Astral Project has been New Orleans' most exciting, inventive and respected morden jazz group. It¹s a co-op band comprised of world-class improvisers, hailed by fans and critics around the world.
Their sound is heralded for it’s unique mix of funky street rhythms, exotic melodies and brilliant improvisation.... Saxophonist Tony Dagradi, a devoted student of Eastern philosophy, coined the band name as a reflection of the group's quest for a higher plane. As anyone who has seen the band in concert knows, every performance finds the band members reaching for the stars. “All of my life what I’ve enjoyed most is that I get to play all kinds of different gigs with different people,” says John Vidacovich, the undisputed master of modern New Orleans drumming. “But this is what we do. What makes us cool as a group is that when we get together – for so long over so many years – we bring these other little trips we’ve been on.” In addition to Dagradi and Vidacovich, the stellar group features guitar god Steve Masakowski and the great James Singleton on bass. This is Astral Project’s first AQ visit, and it promises to be one of the highlights of the year.Read More
