JANUS FILMS is a film distribution company, founded in 1956, that was primarily responsible for bringing foreign films to the attention of US audiences after World War II, during which the exchange of films was forbidden in some countries. In the 1950s and 60s, the way films were being made changed, as well, with the invention of lighter film equipment that allowed creative minds all over the world to make truly independent movies rather than having to rely on studio executives to decide what movies would be made and when. These new, unrestrained films are part of what is now called the Golden Age of art cinema and they drastically changed the way films were made, which inspired a new generation of filmmakers to think outside the box. Janus Films quickly became synonomous with the best foreign films. According to Kent Jones of the New York Film Festival [http://www.rlrubens.com/nyff-06.html], "American film culture without Janus Films is unthinkable." Janus distributes both new and classic foreign films and even has an impressive line of DVDs available of these films. (Paraphrased from 2006 NYFF, http://www.rlrubens.com/nyff-06.html)

THE ROAD / LA STRADA (1954)
[***FILMED IN ENGLISH***]
WATCH THE TRAILER:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA7BXJuGi n4
STORY: Federico Fellini’s wife, Giulietta Masina, plays Gelsomina, a naive girl sold into the employ of a brutal strongman in a traveling circus, in this poetic fable of love and cruelty, winner of the 1956 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
REVIEW: "La Strada: Fellini's masterpiece," 19 August 2005, by jmoulder on IMDB.com. (In part:) "I have just stumbled out of a theater & I am stunned yet aware that I have just witnessed a work of art that was devoid of compromise. That work was La Strada, a cinematic creation directed by Federico Fellini. I have viewed this film several times since but it never pales & each time I take away something new... Anthony Quinn was perfect for the role of Zampano, the grubby strongman performer touring the villages & countryside of post-WW2 Italy. No other actor of the day could have possibly brought what Quinn brings to the role.... The viewer becomes unaware of watching a film. Like all truly great works of art, technique never intrudes & the viewer could be a fly on the wall."
"This lack of artificiality allows the viewer to be fully immersed in the unfolding events. The landscape is the blasted Italian environment just after WW2 & is symbolic of the work's bleak message. The camera rolls on weeds, shacks, broken concrete, poorly maintained roadways, dry, desolate hinterlands & famine-ridden villages. There is no looking away allowed, the viewer is made to see, forced to behold stark realities."
"It is impossible to say exactly what makes this film a masterpiece. By a mysterious & perhaps lucky combination of ingredients it propels itself into the highest circle of cinema. The end is emotionally wrenching & I would venture that few are able to leave it... without a sense of having been deeply moved."

STORY: Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, legendary director François Truffaut’s early masterpiece Jules and Jim charts the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession over the course of twenty-five years.
REVIEW: "Jules et Jim Embodies the Beauty of French Cinema," 14 October 2000, by Nicholas Carlton on IMDB.com. "The French have a remarkable tendency of creating free-flowing, poetic movies that transport this particular art form into subtle, poignant flights of fancy and nowhere is this more evident than in Jules et Jim, which embodies the beauty of French cinema."
"I believe that Truffaut is the most poetic filmmaker in cinematic history. 'Jules et Jim' is his finest moment and, in the ever fluctuating relationships between the Oskar Werner, Henri Serre and Jeanne Moreau characters, we are allowed to be taken along on a refreshing, beatific ride through the passionate simplicity of love and friendship."
"The leisurely philosophical musings of the two men in 'Jules et Jim' are counterbalanced by Moreau's bright, airy amorality. She brings about a radicalism and sense of unpredictability in the movie that is nonetheless charming and utterly innocent and benign. Moreau's instinctive will makes her out to be a selfish attention-seeker but without that, this movie would not be so surprising and liberating. Truffaut's does not stick to a rigid narrative form, like many '50s and '60s French New Wave directors, and he allows the stream of consciousness dialogue and the ever-changing fortunes of Moreau's erratic relationships with the men to dictate the structure. ,Jules et Jim, has a certain clarity of vision."
"French love stories are often based upon dialogue that is rife with throwaway witticisms, perceptive trivial observations, and explosive utterances of love or despair, and ,Jules et Jim, is no different. It can drift along tranquilly until a sudden unexpected change of mood occurs and everything is turned on its head. Moreau's leaping into the river after a civilised night out at the theatre is a delightfully liberating moment, utterly pointless, yet still gleefully uninhibited. My finest memory is the heavenly ditty by Moreau which sums up both her and the movie's personality and atmosphere. So simple, so sublime, and always tugging away in the most sumptuous manner at the heartstrings. I don't think I have ever got that tune out of my head."
"If you want to experience the sheer majesty of cinema, ,Jules et Jim, just has to be seen. Not only is it bright and breezy, but it has tragic moments of pathos as well. There is a surprise at every turn, almost always caused by the Moreau character, and such is the freedom of her spirit and the freedom of the movie's spirit, you can forgive her every action and fickle about-turns. There is no sense of permanence with her. 'Jules et Jim' only confirms my belief that the French make cinema's greatest romances. Utterly natural, hardly ever contrived, and so cool and graceful."

It's hard to say what aspect is best: the cinematography is superb (makes you want to take the first plane to Rio), the cast is wonderful, the music is haunting and beautiful, and the Orpheus/Eurydice myth is well suited to the setting in a Rio favela. THIS WEEK ONLY IS CARTOON NIGHT:
So, the cast normally performs the movie in costumes that they've made that match the ones in the movie, but THIS week, and this week only, will be different because it is CARTOON NIGHT! This means that the cast and crew will be wearing costumes to make them look like cartoons! You might see a cast member who looks like a Smurf, Scooby Doo, Garfield, Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, a Snork, or just about anything else. The cast very much encourages the audience to participate, so please wear any type of cartoon costume that you can come up with. Even if you just have a cartoon t-shirt, please wear it! You might see Scooby Doo and a PowerPuff Girl together "bumping" in the Toucha-Touch Me scene or you could see Eddie come out for his part as Bart Simpson. This is a big secret and it'll be a big surprise! BTW, next month is 80s night!
COSTUME CONTEST: There will be a contest for the best cartoon costume, so come dressed up! This is audience only, so the cast can't participate. If enough people are in the contest, we might give prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, too!
TICKETS: Every week, tickets are just $5, whether there is a theme night or not. To get your tickets online, please click here:

HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE BEFORE?
Then, you're a "virgin." That's the term used for you, so it is nothing personal. You'll be asked to come up on stage to be "de-virginized," but it is just a little bit of mild embarassment that is a right of passage. (Wear underwear).
MOVIE TRAILER:

STORY: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a magical phenomenon unlike anything ever before seen onscreen. Borrowing largely from cinema's horror conventions, the film begins as an innocent young couple is stranded at the home of a mad scientist who is building the perfect man. The castle is filled with a most bizarre group of characters who worship their master, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played magnificently by the fabulously sexy Tim Curry, in leather jacket, pearls, fishnet stockings, and heavy makeup. Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to examine their own sexuality as the voluptuous doctor releases the hidden desires in each of them. Based on the stage musical by Richard O'Brien (who also appears in the film as Riff Raff), the film comes alive with unforgettable song-and-dance numbers that have come to represent the sexual liberation of the 1970s. The outstanding costuming and makeup, the terrific acting by a group of relative unknowns (Curry, O'Brien, Bostwick, Sarandon, Nell Campbell, Patricia Quinn, Meat Loaf), and the memorable songs ("Time Warp," "Sweet Tranvestite") help make The Rocky Horror Picture Show one of the most bizarrely entertaining and satisfying musicals ever made." - From IMDB.com
SHOW: Since it's 1975 release, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has evolved into a phenomenon. Live casts all over the world perform the movie while it is being shown on a movie screen, even duplicating the costumes, movements, and props. Over the years, audience participation (AP) lines have been created to shout during gaps in dialogue to get laughs, frequently using profanity and sexual themes. Another Rocky tradition involves the audience using specific props during the movie, such as throwing rice during the wedding scene, toast during a toast, and more ("prop bags" are available through the cast). People who have never seen a live performance of the movie are known as "virgins" and go through an embarassing, but harmless, de-virginization ritual before the movie starts. At our theatre, a live cast, called "Interchangeable Parts," performs "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on Saturday nights at 11:50pm. The show is adult-oriented and rated R (no one under 17 admitted without parent or guardian). Parental discretion is advised.
THEME NIGHTS:
NON-DENOMINATIONAL HOLIDAY IN JULY - July 25th! This is a new one that the cast has never done before. You've all heard of Christmas in July, but the cast wanted to be fair (and funny), so they came up with "Non-denominational Holiday in July." This means you can come to the show as Santa Claus, Christmas elves, a snowman, reindeer or something else relating to Christmas OR you can come wearing clothes relating to any other holiday, like Kwanzaa, Hannukah, Bodhi Day, Eid-al-Adha, Shogatsu, or any other one you'd like to celebrate.
CARTOON NIGHT - August 15th! This is also a new one that the cast has never done before. The cast overwhelmingly voted to put on a cartoon night show for the audience, so you know this one will be awesome! Most cast members keep their costume a secret to surprise everyone the night of the show. Someone might show up as Woody Woodpecker, Garfield, Bart Simpson, Stewie Griffin, Roger Rabbit, Charlie Brown, Scooby Doo, or any other cartoon they can think of, so the sky's the limit! As the interactive audience, you are, of course, encourage to participate, too. Wear something cartoon-like and you'll fit right in. If you dress up and have your picture taken at the theatre and send it in to us, it could end up on the Beach Theatre's website!
STARRING:Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf, and others.

BACKGROUND: Arthur Lee was the lead singer and songwriter of the LA rock band "Love." Love's most popular and critically-aclaimed album was realeased in 1967 and was called "Forever Changes." For the album's 35th anniversary, Lee began touring with all new band members under the name "Love with Arthur Lee" and was met with more success than ever, at least partially due to the cult following that had grown for him and his work over the years. [Paraphrased from Wikipedia.com, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Lee_ (musician)]
WRITEUP ON WMNF.ORG: "This is a concert film and a triumphant one, which bookends the Love documentary that we showed in April. The masterpiece ‘Forever Changes’ was performed at London's Royal Festival Hall in January 2003. Originally released in 1967, Love’s 'Forever Changes' is a classic. It constantly appears on critics’ lists of the 'Top Ten albums of all time' and its fusion of folk-rock & psychedelia has influenced a generation of musicians."
"‘The Forever Changes Concert’ was a special event, almost a miracle when one considers the lost, tortured artist life that Arthur Lee had followed since his band broke up in the late sixties - life that saw him addicted drugs and in prison. [Paraphrased from Wikipedia.com, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Lee_
His performance that night is truly outstanding and this interpretation of the all time classic record has been cited by critics as matching the quality and importance of the original work. It isn't often that rock music can be described as being transcendently beautiful but what you'll hear in this presentation is just that. The audience was in a gentle state of rapture, in awe."

STORY: "Nearly 40 years after its theatrical release, Michael Wadleigh's Woodstock remains the titan of rock documentaries. Few docus, rock or otherwise, can approach its ability to immerse audiences in a particular place and time... Held over three days in August, 1969, just outside the rolling farmlands of Bethel, N.Y., the Woodstock music festival showcased some of the best rock and folk of that decade, including the Who; Jimi Hendrix; Janis Joplin; Sly and the Family Stone; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Joe Cocker; Santana; Creedence Clearwater Revival; the Grateful Dead; Joan Baez; Arlo Guthrie; Country Joe & the Fish and many others."
"But the event transcended that of rock 'n' roll spectacle. It drew an estimated 400,000 people -- far eclipsing what its organizers had anticipated -- to become an iconic touchstone in an era of unparalleled social upheaval. The young people across the country who attended endured rain, mud, food shortages and poor sanitation, but the tradeoff was worth the countercultural bliss. In many respects, Woodstock proved to be the final hurrah for a generation that believed it could change the world."
"For historical purposes alone, Woodstock would be worthwhile viewing. But director Michael Wadleigh possessed the ambition, vision and skill to do it right. Armed with a gaggle of hungry young moviemakers (including a then-unknown Martin Scorsese), Wadleigh employed 16 cameras to record more than 100 miles of celluloid. The result, an overwhelming mass of sights and sounds, proved ideal for generous use of split screens. The effect brilliantly conveys the full-blown Woodstock experience -- the music, traffic jams, drugs, mud, skinny-dipping and, of course, the bad brown acid that prompted a warning from the stage. Used in Woodstock several years before split screens would become a cliché of Seventies cinema, the multiple images give Wadleigh leeway to make ironic visual juxtapositions and sly observations." - Written by Phil Bacharach on DVDtalk.com [http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/37642/woo dstock-3-days-of-peace-music-directors-c ut/]
REVIEW: "The music is great, and the performances are enhanced by unusually intimate camerawork. While modern-day rockumentaries typically trade in quick edits and stylistic gimmickry, Wadleigh prefers long, uninterrupted shots. Richie Havens' two numbers that are showcased, 'Handsome Johnny' and 'Freedom / Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,' are nearly hypnotic in their intensity. The Who, Joe Cocker, Sly and the Family Stone and Ten Years After are equally riveting, while Hendrix's guitar assault on 'The Star-Spangled Banner' remains one of rock 'n' roll's singular milestones. Even the lesser performances are fascinating. A clearly stoned John Sebastian provides some laughably hippie-dippy chatter before launching into 'Younger Generation,' which at least gave the filmmakers an opportunity to do a montage of Woodstock babies and toddlers."
"Still, what makes the Oscar-winning film resonate 40 years later is the time that the cameras spend away from the stage. The Sixties' youth movement is captured for posterity, in all its irony-free, tiedyed, psychedelic, hair-flapping, glassy-eyed idealism. Many of the young people interviewed are inadvertently hilarious. One conspiracy-minded young man blames the rain on governmental cloud-seeding. A yoga instructor promises her pupils, 'If you do it right, you'll be flashing momentarily.' The outpouring of naiveté and enthusiasm, even if pot-addled, is curiously endearing."
"The 228-minute director's cut, first released back in 1994, adds about 45 minutes to an already-lengthy movie. Woodstock aficionados won't mind the additional couch time. Included in the extended version are performances by Canned Heat (great), Joplin (not one of her best showings) and Jefferson Airplane (so-so), as well as Hendrix tearing through 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).'" - Written by Phil Bacharach on DVDtalk.com [http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/37642/woo dstock-3-days-of-peace-music-directors-c ut/]
