Happiness 101

Happiness 101 When asked whether they would like to be at work or home, the vast majority of respondents said they long for the 5 o'clock whistle blow or wait for the weekend to be Happy. However, when asked to wear a pager that would randomly ask participants to rate their level of Happiness on a scale from 1-10, most respondents ...rated their level of happiness at work higher than when they were home lounging before the T.V. Discussed will be striking a Happy balance between meaning, pleasure and strengths in the workplace. This class is beneficial for those currently working and can help those seeking employment discover what they really want in their job or career.

Happiness 101

Happiness 101 In Happiness 101 we have four rules adopted from Sonja Lyubomirsky's book The How of Happiness. The rules are: no blame, no shame, no guilt and no complaining. We do this to raise awareness of these "Happiness Robbers" and to keep the class positive. However, I have always acknowledged that there is a time and place... to express so-called "negative" emotions. Over the months it has felt at times that the students of Happiness 101 truly wanted to talk about some deeper issues that are effecting their Happiness. Since Happiness 101 is a class, and not a group, it has not been the right forum to go to a deeper level emotionally. To give students and opportunity to "go there", I will be offering the Happiness Support Group once a month.

This will be a paid event (as opposed to Happiness 101, which is free). I will, however, be splitting up the cost of the group among attendees. Therefore the more people that show up, the cheaper it will be for each individual - so bring a friend. Expect to pay between $10 and $20. Yes, credit cards are accepted. The group will be held at my office: 220 East 3900 South #7, Salt Lake City

Happiness 101: Happiness Through Adversity

I know. You're adverse to adversity. You don't like pain because it hurts you. This week's Happiness 101 discussion will be about finding happiness through adversity. We will also touch on the topic of "Flow" and its relationship to Happiness. Rest... assured you have experienced it - MAYBE even while in the midst of adversity. It promises to be a lively discussion. Join us.

Happiness 101 is a FREE uplifting class where you'll have fun, learn to break unhappy habits, learn HOW to be happy and meet like-minded people. Studies show we are surprisingly poor at making decisions that will ultimately lead to happiness. The material taught in this class is based on scientific research that supports what will REALLY make us happy versus what we think will make us happy.

Happiness 101 If you look at your goals, whatever they are, the agenda behind them is probably to ultimately be happier. But what makes up a good goal? In this week's class we will discuss goals and how they relate to well-being, success and, of course, happiness.

Happiness 101 Many think if they hit the lottery, they would be Happy. An actual study of such lucky people determined that not only were they not happier than they had been before, some were actually more UNhappy than they were before receiving their poster-size check. Likewise, millionaires are more likely to be unhappy than the... average Joe. If you want to be happy, it is important to make your deposits and withdrawals in the appropriate currency. If you are emotionally bankrupt, join us to create a Map to Happiness.

Happiness 101

Happiness 101 We had a wonderful discussion in Happiness 101 last night about four different archetypes of Happiness. What differentiates these archetypes is their focus on happiness – whether it is in the past, present or the future. The Hedonist seeks happiness in instance gratification, sacrificing the future. The Ratracer sacrif...ices the present in hopes of a brighter future. The Nihilist has, essentially, given up on happiness, neither deriving pleasure from the present nor even hope of happiness from the future. People can be find themselves in this frame of mind when past attempts to be happy have not worked and they give up. Then there is my favorite – the Happy archetype. Those in this category strive for their goals but remember to live in the moment and enjoy the journey. In his book, Happier, Tal Ben-Shahar sums up the happy archetype by explaining that if climbing a mountain, the happy archetype would not just focus on reaching the summit, nor would he fixate on the journey. He would both enjoy the climb AND the achievement.
Think about your own life. Which archetype do you identify with? You might be all four archetypes at the same time because there are many different facets of your life. At work, perhaps you are a Ratracer. Socially you might be the Happy archetype. When it comes to food, maybe the Hedonist hat fits the best right now. Be honest with yourself. Once you decide where you are in the different parts of your life, you may start to make adjustments to life a happier life. Next week Happiness 101 we will touch on some VERY important issues regarding Happiness including: potential, success, realism, pleasure and meaning. Join us at 7pm on Monday, November 16th. Happiness 101

Happiness 101 When you hear Archetype, you might immediately think of Carl Jung and his collective of colorful archetypes such as the wise man, goddess and hero. While this is one definition of an archetype, Random House Dictionary defines it as “the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on ...which they are based; a model or first form; prototype.” Pertaining to Happiness there are four archetypes and which one you fall into depends on several things depending on whether you are present or future oriented. In Happiness 101, we will further explore these archetypes, help you determine which one best describes you now and offer exercises to help you make steps toward being happier.
