Utah State Democratic Party Happy new year to one and all! Enjoy this romp through Utah's political landscape of the past ten years. One thing is certain, for good or ill the next decade won’t be anything like the one just past.

utdems.blogspot.com
In some ways things look remarkably the same as they did ten years ago: there is a Democrat in the White House; the United States is represented around the world by a female Secretary of State; our country is trying to end military involvement in Iraq.

Utah State Democratic Party Carlie Christensen, who has been with the U.S. Attorney's office for 19 years, will become the acting U.S. Attorney for Utah. She has been the first assistant to the current US Attorney for the past three-and-a-half years and headed up the civil division for eight years prior to that.

Utah State Democratic Party Utah Democratic Party Chair Wayne Holland claims Mark Shurtleff and other republicans are drinking the "Glenn Beck Kool-Aid" in their frivolous lawsuit to stop healthcare reform.
Suddenly, Shurtleff is interested in stopping unethical deals?
He's against government-funded health insurance programs?

What is that word th...at describes an inconsistency between what is advocated and what is done to hide from others actual motives or feelings?

How much of my tax money is going to be wasted on this lawsuit? U-Duh spent five years defending their stoopid liquor laws (we never did get full disclosure on how much money was pissed away on that). Shurtleff and Chaffetz need to lose their publicly-funded healthcare.

Utah State Democratic Party Professor S. Grover Rich, founder and Director of the Institute of International Relations and Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah, passed away on Christmas morning 2009. Many in the Democratic Party know him as one of the "Damned Old Democrats" who regularly lunched at the Alta Club.

He was Preside...nt Kennedy's appointee as Professor of Foreign Affairs at the National War College in Washington, D.C. in 1962. Many Utahns know Dr. Rich through his support for the Art Barn on Finch Lane, St. Mark's School, Salt Lake Committee on Foreign Relations, Inter-American Council of Utah, Utah United Nations Assoc., state Director of UNESCO, and board of the McGillis School.

He was also philanthropist extraordinaire, donating generously to KUED, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and, yes, the Democratic Party.

Lola, I heard people say they were voting for Chaffetz because he played football for YBU, and that was their primary reason for voting for him; the immigration issue came second. You can't hear yourself think in UT county over the sound of sheep bleating.

Utah State Democratic Party Do you want to know about the details of healthcare reform? Here is the best source of information on the Senate bill that passed called The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

It's not clear you understand either point. I didn't say that all taxes and services are immoral. I said that it is immoral when you force one group to pay for health care services for another group.

Would you object if someone came up to your door and demanded some money at the point of a gun? Does this objection go away if the thief hires someone else to do it (e.g., IRS)?

There's no such thing as an unalienable right that requires someone else's property to be forcibly taken. Charity should always be voluntary.... See More

On the 2nd point, subsidizing an industry as the legislation does causes prices to rise because it makes the consumer less sensitive to price increases. As cost is removed from the consumer's thinking, the producer will keep increasing the cost.

Gov't is not an armed robber. We all have a civic duty to participate in its decisions. We do not have to agree with the decision, but we are expected to abide by it until overturned or anarchy reigns.

It is understandable that you see healthcare as a consumer activity and therefore that accepting what was not purchased is charity and not a proper subject for gov't interference.

But for many -- maybe most -- healthcare is not a consumer activity. Those under duress or insensate cannot make appropriate consumer decisions. Information about cost is not available even from the provider (doctors rarely know what the billing department is up to). What services are necessary for approrpiate treatment are not known to the "consumer" but only to the provider. And, finally, disease can be communicated to the rest of the community making the personal a public concern.... See More

Private payment is rare. We long ago decided to utilize insurance mechanisms to spread the costs/risk to a community pool. The operation of those mechanisms has broken. The reforms are meant to repair those and restore a true insurance product where we agree to a small loss in order to prevent a catastrophic loss by spreading the risk.

Utah State Democratic Party Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is poised to sue the federal government over health care reform announced his chief civil deputy, John Swallow, a former congressional candidate. In the most laughable statement in years, Swallow said, "We're working hard to prevent what could become a culture of vote buying." Of co...urse, State Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, said he backs Shurtleff's position.

But Senate budget chairman Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, said he was unmoved by Sederburg's use of the word "catastrophic" to warn against additional cuts.
