Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo Local angler Karl Elliott caught a trophy bass on Oak Creek Reservoir to round out the year on a high note. This 12 pound bass was caught on 12/30/09 in 44 degree water dragging a 7 inch worm in 15 to 20 feet of water. This falls short of the lake record of 12.88 caught in the year 2000, but Karl has been on some fis...h. The other photo shows Karl with two nice fish he caught in the month of November. Great fishing Karl.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo The fish populations at lakes Colorado City, Moss Creek, and E.V. Spence have been severely impacted by toxic golden alga blooms since 2001. Our water samples for this December show that these lakes are not being spared this year. Currently, there is no cost-effective way of treating these lakes.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo O.C Fisher Lake record White Crappie
1.91 lb White Crappie caught 11-21-09 flipping crappie jigs under a cork to stick ups in the river channel. This is a spring time technique, but the lake is so low the fish don't have many options. Caution is required while boating on the lake.

Hopefully it's not that bad. Our fall 2008 trap net samples were very encouraging for white crappie. We had a very high catch rate with good numbers in the 10 to 12- inch range and also many fish in the 4 to 8-inch range that would later recruit to legal size. Gill netting in 2009 also showed encouraging signs for recruitment of channel and blue catfish to harvestable size.

Yesterday, district staff, Bobby Farquhar, and Craig Bonds met with Dr. Rey Patino and students Matt Van Landeghem and Seth Long to discuss golden alga research possibilities at O.H. Ivie. Don't worry, there's no problem at Ivie. It's the two rivers that feed it that are of interest...

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo Going to a Texas Brigades board meeting tomorrow. Texas Brigades is an organization that runs wildlife and fisheries leadership camps for high school youth. Bass Brigade may need to find a new venue for July 2010. If you know of any group camps that will accomodate 60 and have waterfront access (and not very expensi...ve), please let us know! If you know any young-uns who are into hunting, fishing, or nature, tell them about our camps. Adult volunteers are needed, too. Check us out at www.texasbrigades.org.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo Trout season is here! These cold-water fish only come to Texas water bodies during the winter, when TPWD stocks them in small lakes and rivers statewide. San Angelo is getting their first stocking of 332 trout this week, in the same spot as always: between Irving and Oakes Street. The same number will be stocked her...e every two weeks through early March. They take canned corn, salmon eggs, and trout marshmallows, and can also be caught on small flashy spinners and sinking flies. If you catch some, make sure and post your pictures here. For more info on TPWD's annual trout programs, follow this link: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/trout_stocking.phtml
Happy fishing!

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo It never ceases to amaze me how some people will completely trash a natural area that they are there to enjoy. Every time we go to Twin Buttes, North Pool or South Pool, we see tons of trash on the ground. There's no excuse for this! Pack it in . . . pack it out. It's really not a difficult concept.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo We were given two artificial habitat structures by a local angler, and we decided to deploy them into Twin Buttes' south pool to enhance the limited habitat there, and provide a target for anglers. But, things don't always go as planned . . . the structure didn't sink, even with rocks added. So, we are going to try a...gain today, with some cinder blocks tied to it. GPS waypoints for these structures will be posted soon.

Ask John to get you some railroad iron and attach it to the bottom. I don't know if you know, but wood does float. :-)

Well, yeah I guess it does, doesn't it? We really underestimated the amount of weight it would take to sink this thing! On our second try, we added 40 bricks, and it didn't budge. Third try, we added some old iron fenceposts with concrete still attached, plus two cinder blocks, and the thing finally sank!!! It is in 7 feet of water, straight south of the launching area, almost all the way to the corner. If anyone wants GPS coordinates, just call us.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries--San Angelo The trap net sample from OH Ivie was very spotty . . . only 1.9 crappie per net-night, which is not as good as it has been in the past three samples. The spatial distribution was obviously skewed towards the upper end of the lake. In fact, the only nets that had more than a couple of crappie were the ones at the fart...hest upstream sites on both the Concho and Colorado River arms. The most interesting thing we saw out there this week wasn't even a fish . . . check out the video of the little buck crossing the lake. We were speeding along the channel at mid-lake when we spotted him right in the middle.
