Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas

Lots of excitement here at DDRTX tonight! We have volunteers getting ready for Rainbow's triumphant return! Foster mom Holly is getting a place ready where Rainbow will be able to relax and recover in comfort with lots of love, sunlight, and a beautiful view. Foster moms Emily, Carole, and Rhonda are visiting Rainbow at the hospital and telling her the good news. Then Emily and Rhonda will head out to visit our friends at Pet Supplies Plus at Brookhollow to pick up the stuff Rainbow will need like vitamins, bones to chew, kongs with cheese in a can, and high calorie food. Christine is getting a delivery ready of clean blankies, bedding, potty pads, and an x pen so Rainbow will be able to stretch out without any of the other dogs jumping on her. Thanks so much to everyone who donated and prayed for Rainbow!
Rainbow has multiple spinal fractures, some old, some new, but many, many
fractures due to lack of bone density. She has wasted or 'atrophied'
muscle in all four of her limbs, severe calcium deficiency, due to chronic
lack of proper healthy nutrition and her unfortunate life style. Being
continuously bred, the puppies have literally sucked the calcium out of
her system, and her body had to give up calcium from her bones to support
her litters. Additionally, the lack of nutritious food, being
continuously bred, and lack of sunlight deprived her of necessary vitamins
(such as D from sunlight).

She has what's called MBD - Metabolic Bone Disorder - Due to the extreme
pain she's in from the fractures, it's not unreasonable to consider
euthanasia as it's very difficult, if not impossible to predict her
future. However, on the optimistic side, while surgery is not an option,
Dr. Israel of STVS is hopeful to be able to manage her pain with
medications and physical therapy to help her fractures heal and lessen the
pain. We'd need to feed a high caloric, high quality food, with vitamin
supplements like PetTabs Plus with calcium, get her out in the sunlight as
often as possible, and do some very minimal, body supported and regimented
'range of motion' type of phsyical therapy for 4 to 6 weeks. Then we can
bring her back for more xrays to see if this helps regain both muscle and
bone mass. Due to the severity of the vertebral fractures, she most likely
will not be able to walk un-supported. But if the fractures heal and she
can regain the ability to hold herself up, the pain 'might' hopefully
recede enough for her to use a cart. If it doesn't work, we can decide
what next steps to take after her vet visit with the specialists at STVS
in 6 weeks. This type of chronic bone density problem will take MONTHS to
heal, not mere weeks as with normal fractures.

Dr. Israel will be gone the rest of the week, however, Dr. Dahlinger will
be taking over Rainbow's care. She's in a lot of pain, being kept on IV
pain meds and antibiotics, turned several times a day and being kept clean
and dry. Until she's able to take pain medication orally and she recovers
from all the tests and xrays, she will remain at STVS til at least Tuesday
night, or Wednesday morning. Then she needs to be in an extremely gentle
and quiet foster home close to VREC in case of emergencies...

DDRTX will get additional advice on exactly what food and supplements we
need to get for her and will have that available to her very special
foster home, as well as pain medications for pain management and discharge
instructions for range of motion therapy. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are
going to try to help her and pray that her spine will heal with the gift
of time, strict calm rest, gentle handling, and lots of will power and
prayer!
Christine just off the phone w/ STVS Dr. Israel. Rainbow's fever is concerning
them most of all. Said she's really glad that we brough Rainbow in last
night. Blood work to be done asap. They gotta address the fever and
possible infection - somewhere - first and foremost. Then more xrays w/
her sedated, and possible MRI. Vet will call later with update and test
results, meantime, they'll give her antibiotics and do blood work up and
urinalysis.
