The Green Tortoise Hostel has been a favorite of backpackers and travellers for decades.  From our unbeatable location in historic North Beach (a quick walk to tourist favorites like Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf), to our cozy dorm rooms, to our relaxing private rooms with free movies, to our free meals and pub crawls, to our famous Adventure Travel bus tours...those are just a few of the reasons the Tortoise has become a legend.

If i ever go back to SF....

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Tortoise for 2 nights while in SF. The first night we stayed in a private room, and the next in a dorm. The private room was adorable, and the dorm was cool too. Great food, great atmosphere, and great people, and I'll never forget partying in the ballroom till 6 a.m.!!

Staff is awesome, party never stops, and people actually talk to each other. I can't wait to come back!

if your staying at the cool green tortoise hostel while in san francisco please consider one of the many green tortoise trips that are available and cheap. im just after doing the 9 day northern pioneer trip and yosemite trip. both brought invaluable experiences, bringin me to many of the national parks. we covered miles you just wouldnt want to drive yourself, its handycus alot of the time the drivers will drive throughout the night while everyone else sleeps. the food is great and camping some nights is fun too. il def do another trip.

I'm not a young guy, and i dont booze it up,
But i stayed there in 1999, and had an absolute B L A S T I'll be there again in December and very much looking forward to it.
I hope it still has it's charm and character. :)

Amazing!! the best hostel in the world. Staff are wicked, food is amazing (go charles!) Love that place, can't wait to get back!!

If ur a dry arse, this is not the place for you, otherwise there is no other way to have the craic agus ceoil in a san fran hostel. The ballroom is serious fun, ya can't beat the tunes while sippin on some 40's. Deffinately if visiting San Fran book it, ya won't regret it!!!!!!!!
