SUITE FIVE SALON announces the graduation of Melissa Magtibay to the position of a professional hair colorist. To mark the occasion, there will be a swingin’ soirée "Color me Graffiti: Summer 2009 Hair Collection By Melissa Magtibay,” at Space Gallery, 1141 Polk St., San Francisco on Sunday, July 12, at 6 p.m. The even...t will feature live models, all sporting Melissa’s chic, hip hair creations, with haircuts by Bradley Crane, Lori Talorico, and Karrie Dies, and makeup by Amiee Morehart. Lively beats will be provided by Skooter with 959 Dj’s.
For the event, Melissa’s inspiration is urban hip-hop culture and graffiti. Expect a lot of color, unique shapes, and a completely contemporary take on hair artistry, with Melissa’s signature flair.
An East Bay native, Melissa joined SUITE FIVE SALON last year to become a colorist- and stylist-in-training under the very capable instruction of (beloved) SUITE FIVE colorist Rita Leanio. “Melissa’s attention to detail, unique and enthusiastic vision, and personable demeanor have made her a great addition to the staff,” says SUITE FIVE owner Bradley Crane. “It’s exciting to see her come into her own as a stylist, and we’re thrilled she will now be a permanent part of our dynamic team.”
Melissa Megtibay comes from a family that has long been in the hair styling business. “I’ve known since junior high school that working with hair is what I want to do,” says the ever-ebullient stylist.
Melissa’s professional training began with attending the prestigious Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica. From there, she took a position at Chop Chop Salon in Los Angeles. After a year there, Melissa returned to the Bay Area, where she trained at DiPietro Todd Salon for two years before signing on to train at SUITE FIVE SALON.
“I am inspired by everyday life,” says Melissa. “I take a look at not only facial features and tones but also a client’s fashion and career to determine what will best suit them.”
Founded by San Francisco native and sought-after stylist Bradley Crane, SUITE FIVE SALON opened in July 2006 and offers the highest quality in cut and color in a chic, custom-designed space on Grant Avenue in Union Square. The space, which offers a soaring fifth-floor view, reflects the Salon's philosophy: clean, uncluttered, modern. SUITE FIVE SALON also features bimonthly, rotating art installations highlighting contemporary, Bay Area artists, as well as its increasingly popular BLOW OUT TO GO OUT™ hair styling “education” nights: learn salon styling tips to create that “just left the salon” look every day. SUITE FIVE SALON announces an exhibition of artwork by San Francisco-based artist, Nancy Spoelhof, June 2 through 27. A reception for the artist will take place on Thursday, June 4, 6:00-7:30pm.
This exhibit features a selection of Spoelhof’s bright, colorful figurative paintings. Spoelhof’s work explores ideas surround...ing society. In the artist’s words: “I am interested in all aspects of social information and interaction . . .. For example, the way a group of women affect one another’s style of dress, the way young people develop slang and own language.”
Composed of well-defined shapes—a la paper cut-out dolls—figures, sometimes in groups, sometimes solo, are almost abstracted in their simplicity; they’re funky stylized characters clad in layered, often striped dress and set in environments that emphasize and mimic their playful colors and patterns. As a whole, the works are tight, lively compositions as much about form and color interplay as narrative. The elements of the work—skirts, a table, legs, background striped wall—often abut one and other in a manner that gives the works a collage-like appearance. Heavily applied paint and medium gives the paintings a rich texture and movement.
Nancy Spoelhof has exhibited in various galleries, including the Lake Gallery and Dolby Chadwick, San Francisco. She holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. For more information about Spoelhof and her work, visit http://www.nancyspoelhof.com.
Suite Five Salon features bimonthly, rotating art installations highlighting contemporary artists in conjunction with downtown’s First Thursdays. For more information, 415-362-5005 or info@suitefivesalon.com.
