San Francisco Opera "Salome" review from SF Classical Voice

“The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death,” sings Salome, the eponymous central character in Richard Strauss’ 1905 opera. Debatable as the Judean princess’ assertion may be, there was no ...

I hope Miss Fillmore knows how much her emergency performance on Friday night was appreciated... Even if she was announced wrong. To fly in and learn new blocking in basically no time at all was an impressive feat by her and the other performers.

Saw it twice ;-) Florez is mind blowing! Damrau lacks technique but a big beautiful voice (Dessay would be much better). All and all a great production that was loved by SF opera listeners. Bravo! ;-)

(09-16) 17:52 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Call it a trifecta, or a hat trick, or a triple whammy. Whatever the terminology, soprano Patricia Racette tackled all three soprano roles in Puccini's "Il Trittico" at the San Francisco Opera on Tuesday night and emerged triumphant.

It was a great afternoon all around, but there's no question that the largest share of the credit goes to Patricia Racette. She was phenomenal.

When you read Dan Brown's new best-seller "The Lost Symbol" and watch the inevitable follow-up big-budget movie, keep in mind Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio," onstage in a new San Francisco Opera production. Brown's topic is the Freemasons; his views in the

Oh for pity's sake, Paul. Rose was an excellent choice. A brilliant comic actor, and fully capable of the vocal demands of Mozart, who used vocalists like stunt pilots. Unlike any other opera composer, he had no real appreciation for the limits of the human voice. Dunleavy was far less capable of the insane demands on the lead soprano, but has ... I was in the grand tier and heard all the bass notes. If you want to "hear" the opera, instead of being "seen," go upstairs one level and pay a little extra.
