*Bride of Frankenstein Stage Werx, 533 Sutter; http://stagewerx.org, http://foulplaysf.com.
$25. Thurs-Sat, 8pm. Through Oct 17. Foul Play, makers of drag treat
Stale Magnolias, have another trick up their collective producing
sleeve in time for Halloween, in this arch, inventively staged but
otherwise faithfully rendered ...re-telling of the classic 1935 horror
movie. Part of the fidelity followed by director-adapter Flynn De Marco
(who also excels as the rather chastened, sensitive and starkly mad
scientist, Henry Frankenstein) involves maintaining a strict
black-and-white schema throughout, in an effectively ghoulish-looking
homage to the sequel to 1931's Frankenstein, wherein the monster (a
gangling, slurring and surprisingly heart-stirring Fennel Skellyman)
demands a mate from his creator, with assistance from Frankenstein's
competitor in the reanimated flesh department, Dr. Pretorius (Jim
Jeske, in a deliciously precise incarnation of B-movie evil). Macabre,
perhaps, until you realize it's ultimately the story of a man looking
for love in all the wrong places. Ever harried by the
torch-and-pitchfork set, the monster finds momentary companionship in a
blind hermit (a pitch-perfect Seanetta) before the ultimate blow lands:
unrequited love from a svelte assemblage of cemetery castoffs. If the
monsters are no more crudely fashioned than the plot supporting them,
the staging comes gilded with many fine and delicate touches, including
a relishing turn by Gerri Lawlor as irritable busybody housekeeper
Minnie, and Laura Wachtel's celluloidal study in wan feminine frailty
as Mrs. F. (Avila) http://stagewerx.org
