Eagleson Institute Balancing Energy Efficiency with Laboratory Safety

In this one-day class, participants will learn about major laboratory HVAC energy conservation techniques and how they may impact health and safety. After different approaches are described, attendees will participate in exercises for different lab HVAC scenarios to be...tter understand the energy and health and safety balance.

Who is this course for?
Design Engineers, Architects, EHS Professionals, Facility Managers, Energy Engineers, Lab Managers, and Sustainability Officers.

Outline:
Energy Conservation for Chemical Fume Hood Labs
• VAV Systems
• High Performance/Low Flow Hoods
• Ventilation Rates
• Testing and Certifying Low Flow Hoods
Energy Conservation for Biological Use Labs
• Selecting the Proper Biosafety Cabinet
• New Energy Efficient Biosafety Cabinet Designs
• Controlling Heat Load with Fan Coil or Chilled Beam Units
Lab Building HVAC Energy Conservation Techniques
• Heat Recovery
• Diversity Assumptions
• Reducing Energy Use in Unoccupied Labs
• Low Static Pressure System Design
Payback Calculation Exercises
• Small groups will work on payback calculations for lab scenarios. Results will be compared to stimulate discussion on which approach provides the optimal balance of conservation and health and safety.
