The Pump Station & Nurtury™ presents Mommie Matters™ What Matters to Moms™
Featuring Certified Lactation consultants and Co-Founders of The Pump Station & Nurtury Wendy Haldeman MN, RN, IBCLC and Corky Harvey MS, RN, IBCLC
The breast makes two different kinds of milk. Fore and Hind. Both are good for the baby.
When the b...reast is not being used, the milk that builds up is Fore Milk. It consists predominately of water and lactose.
Once you put baby to breast (or start pumping) the breast starts to synthesize fat into the milk. The milk that the baby gets has more fat and the same amount of lactose.
Baby is more satisfied with Hind Milk. All mothers breast milk is good for baby.
No one knows for sure when the Hind Milk starts coming through to the baby.
If your baby is gaining weight, the baby is getting Hind Milk
One theory holds that it takes 18 minutes to get to the Hind Milk.
Most Moms don’t breastfeed that long on one breast.
Moms are told they HAVE to use both breasts every feeding.
Switching breasts during feeding, baby does not get more satisfying, fat enriched milk.
Babies become irritable, want to feed more, gassy, spitting up.
Breast Blocking: Mom stay’s with one breast through several feedings (two to three hours depending on her milk production). Baby gets more satisfying less gas producing milk. Read More
