Daily Meditations #25

This is a new bit of work that I am exploring. I was invited to participate in a show in New Orleans in the spirit of photographer Renee Cox.
I think this will be the direction I go in for that work. Still deciding. Anyway, with out giving to much of a description, let me say a few... things that come to mind. I am exploring detachment and geographic presence as it relates to my body. I think these works will be images that are of "me" but with out seeing me (eyes, face, detail of body). I think it offers some interesting thinking around a kind of invisibility that is less about not being seen and more about being so seen you are then made un-visible. I had some help...thank you Katherine McKittrick and Richard Wright.Read More

Food for Thought
Sometimes the simplest forms of sustenance are the most bountiful as food for thought. This was a meal prepared for me. I can't help but have thought about this while enjoying my meal.

I walked passed this remnant of a poster/ ad a couple days ago and thought the jutaposition of image, tag, and window interesting. The head of the subject blends into the tag as if it continues the image...in a way.

Trying to keep this going. Not one of my favorites but interesting none the less.
Enjoy.

More fun with a macro lens.
I decided to upload another meditation before heading towards the intimate quarters of my portfolio writing.
Interestingly enough I see a relationship here. I get so into the macro of my writing, I sometimes have difficulty seeing the bigger themes, but yet I am able to w...eave in those subtle nuances.
When I look at this image made I imagine more then what I see from a pulled out distance, because I see the details. Still thinking of cracks...this time I also see water and a terrain, or landscape if you will...land.
The image is a close up of a bike tire.Read More

Crack in the Facade
It's been a while since I've done a daily meditation. But I haven't forget. I would like to think I've been living life in other ways.
Anyway, here is the latest. I was actually trying out a macro lens (100mm) and came across a crack in a window. What I like about this shot is the... little sliver of reflection you can see with in the crack. I wonder what is it telling me.
I see multiple meanings. Some on the politics of "sight" what we see, what we think we see. I think of a crack in a window, a protection if you will. And I think of that little glimpse of a reflection in the facade.

Tell me what I want to hear...
Toronto, ON
I need to take a moment and credit Spec...we were taking a stroll around and she was first to spot this. There are several things that I appreciate about this meditation.
First, I had an opportunity to engage with a friend (Spec) and my new city, in a differe...nt kind of way. I don't often notice writing, words, texts as I walk and photograph, mostly because I tend to direct my gaze on the actual visual landscape of the moment.
Secondly, this is a piece of public art that is a true example of questioning how we structure our reality. I mean how simple and complex a statement..."tell me what I want to hear"...a reminder...

Not that I want to make a habit of it, but there is something distinct and interesting about using my cellphone camera to catch a moment in time.
This day, I nearly stepped on my subject of interest. Upon revisiting the trail later in the day, I purposely looked for the snail impedin...g my way, only to find it crushed; likely under the weight of a traveling bicycle.
Fleeting moments, my day is a culmination of these moments, however small they represent the cycle in which birth and death are a part.Read More

I caught this with my cell phone on the way to a coffee shop where I live. I think this says something about the mediation of technology and being at the right place at the right time. 30 seconds later, the butterfly flew away.

This is my attempt to notice, experience, AND question from moment to moment. I share these images as a daily offering.

Corner of Nostrand Ave, NY on a Saturday Evening
I have this thing about being "seen" taking photographs. It's strange, to be the one photographing, yet feel like you are the one being watched. What a relationship.
So I decided to walk with the camera around my neck, with finger on rel...ease, camera at my stomach aimed up. In other words, I didn't look through the viewfinder when shooting. Here is one resulting image.Read More

North Philadelphia PA
What I like about this shot is that there so clearly is the presence of a person who once sat there. Place has the ability to hold memory even when a person has left the location; what they were doing and who they might have been.
I also like that I can see through the chair into the background.

Fulton Ave, Brooklyn NY
I imagine what it looks like to walk in a daze, or perhaps with some type of impaired vision...this is much like my sight when I don't have my glasses on. In actuality, I shot this from the hip, without looking through the view finder to "compose" the shot.
