Food, Inc.
Thurs.–Fri., November 12th–13th, 8 p.m.
ONLY
Sun., November 15th, 2:30 p.m. SPECIAL "LOCAL FOODS, LOCAL FILMS" EVENT
Directed by Robert Kenner
USA • 94 min. • 2008
Rated PG
Otto Von Bismarck once said,
“Laws are like sausages; it is better not to see them being made.” This is
especially true, perhaps, of laws regardi...ng the production of sausages—or of
food in general. However, Food, Inc.
does just that, lifting the veil on our nation’s food industry and exposing the
dark, mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer
with the consent of the government. Controlled primarily by a handful of
multinational corporations, the global food production business has as its goal
the production of large quantities of food at low cost, resulting in large
profits—and in greater control of the global food supply by these few
companies. The health and safety of the food itself, of the animals used to
make it, of the workers making it, and of the consumers actually eating it, are
not often these companies’ chief concerns, and are in turn often overlooked by
government in an effort to provide cheap food regardless of these negative
consequences. The answer? There is no simple solution, but likely lies with
changes on the demand side of the equation—that is, among consumers. Food, Inc. reveals surprising and often
shocking truths about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a
nation, and where we are going from here. “An engaging and often wrenching
film, Food, Inc. covers a wide range
of material, including the horrific, the humorous and the exemplary.” —Andrew
