Would you support a ban on single use plastic bags?
Mayor Sam Adams, last week, presented the city with a draft ordinance to ban single use plastic bags in Portland, Oregon. His office says that according to a recent poll, 2 out of 3 Portlanders support a ban. The ordinance would encourage shoppers to use fabric or ot...her reusable bags by banning the plastic ones at checkout counters and charging a nickel for every paper bag. The proposal also includes a plan for an outreach campaign to provide reusable carryout bags to interested Portland residents, and to work with service providers to distribute information and reusable carryout bags to interested senior and low-income households. Additionally, new statewide legislation is being proposed in California for consideration in 2011.
