Yeah, I have yet to hear a bad review from critics or fans alike. I would love to see this, but Sherlock takes priority. Atleast for me. =) I am a huge Holmes fan after all.

Science Fiction Book Club You really shouldn't judge a book by its cover, it's true. But we can certainly judge art for the first ever SFBC Catalog Cover Contest! The contest is officially closed, judging to commence, and announcements will be made so keep an eye on our mailings to see who the winners are! -Rome

Science Fiction Book Club Ciao a tutti - this final suggestion for the week was inspired by a recent trip to Florence, Italy, where I was lucky enough to see a major exhibit on the brilliant heretic Galileo. He now stars in his own science fiction thriller, masterfully written by Kim Stanley Robinson. GALILEO'S DREAM is an intoxicating mix of h...istorical fact and future speculation, perhaps the creation of a new subgenre, science factulation. (Then again, perhaps not.) -Rome

Science Fiction Book Club Anybody here remember the Gor books by John Norman? I was at a cocktail party and it came up but it's one of those series that sadly did not make it across the ocean to Guam when I was growing up. The story of the series sounds as fascinating as the stories themselves. Would love to hear any thoughts. Anyone...? -Rome

I read a few and found them a pale imitation of Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series.

I haven't read them. I haven't even heard of them. I would like them if they are Burroughs-ish though, I devoured the Mars series.

Science Fiction Book Club March 2010 is looking like a bumper crop for fine sf/f. January & February has some great treats in store for you but the March-April period is particularly bananas. Where am I going to put all those books? Keep an eye out for the catalogs and find out... -Rome

Science Fiction Book Club An awesome return for one of the pulp-noiriest of them all -- Norvell Page's THE SPIDER... The Shadow! Doc Savage! The Avenger! All were spawned from World War corruption and society’s hunger for swift justice. Yet one alone towered above the rest—pulp fiction’s most sensational judge, jury and executioner, The Spider:... Master of Men! Discover this golden age treasure and see him overcome diabolical villains! (and yes, i do need all those exclamation points to describe this book - it's that swell.) - Rome

Science Fiction Book Club I've been trying to stay away from black covers but just can't seem to stop myself. She was and always will be my first paranormal heroine -- Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series has been a non-stop thrill ride from the get-go without slowing down. With great characters, accessible magic, and unbelievably twisted plots ...in every book, Harrison is crazy-sick; so much so that I can't wait to read what she puts poor Rachel through in every book. Did I mention there's a new book coming out in Feb 2010? Might be time to do some catching up... -Rome

Yeah, I am not a big fan of a lot of this genre, but she and Lilith Saintcrow pen the best stories.

Harrison's Rachel Morgan series has been quite the enjoyable, rollicking thrill ride to read. The first seven have seen a growing cast of well-rounded, imperfect, quirky characters egnage an intriguing array of locations, and scenarios. All I can say is fun on a printed page.

Science Fiction Book Club And the other sf novel on Time Top 10 Fiction Books of the Year is Paolo Bacigalupi's THE WINDUP GIRL. I've so enjoyed Bacigalupi's short stories so I'm thrilled to see him succeed in the long form novel. Not yet available through sfbc, but soon!

Bacigalupi is great! This is not thrill-ride action or sunshine futurism, but gritty and thought-provoking ideas being hammered out and tested. His work is very well-written and compelling to read.

Science Fiction Book Club Rome here, and I've been reading THE LITTLE STRANGER by Sarah Waters. It's a period haunted house story set in post-WWII, about a country doctor getting involved with a wealthy family declining along with their country estate. I'm about halfway through and the book has completely hooked me, revealing its creepy core bi...t by bit, building the fear layer upon layer, much like master chefs do with their do with their culinary creations, only Ms. Waters medium is the English language. Beautiful & haunting, it brings to mind a subtler or more patient Poe, or perhaps F Scott Fitzgerald taking over the writing of THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.

Science Fiction Book Club Is thankful for new authors coming into their own. Take Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games novels. This series just keeps getting better. CATCHING FIRE is the sequel to THE HUNGER GAMES and it continues with the high quality of writing in the first book, and even manages to go beyond it. The action, characters..., and unexpected twists and turns are ramped up, and the plight of Katniss, Peeta and company are guaranteed to keep you riveted & reading just one more page, even as you fight off the tryptophan from the five servings of turkey & leftovers you'll have this weekend. --Rome Q
