Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum A special opportunity to honor coal miners, past and present, will be offered at the Anthracite Heritage Museum on Saturday, December 19, 2009. On that date, designated by the Pennsylvania Legislature as Coal Miner’s Day, there will be an exhibit of photographs by John Horgan, Jr. The exhibit represents a selection of... photographs that Horgan made during his work with the Hudson Coal Company from the years of 1917 to 1922—the golden era of the anthracite industry in Lackawanna County—a time in which Scranton was referred to as “The Anthracite Capital of the World!” The region provided anthracite or hard coal energy to 24 states, the District of Columbia and Canada!

The exhibit is installed in the Museum’s newly renovated auditorium and is free and open to the public. As the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will focus in 2009 on the theme: Energy: Innovation and Impact, the exhibit will be in place for one year. The Museum’s Store will also have copies of the book: Illustrating an Anthracite Era: The Photographic Legacy of John Horgan, Jr. on sale.
