December's film feature is Joyeux Noël a 2005 film directed by Christian Carion with actors Diane Kruger and Dany Boon.
This movie is inspired by a true story that happened on Christmas Eve 1914 during World War I in many places on the front line. When war broke out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprised and pulled a ...million men in its wake. Christmas arrived, with its snow and multitude of family and army bundles. But the surprise wouldn't come from inside the general parcels in the French, Scottish, German trenches. That night a momentous event would alter the destinies of four characters:a Scotish priest, a French lieutenant, an exceptional German tenor and a wonderful Danish Soprano. They found themselves at the heart of an unprecedented fraternalisation between German, British and French troops.
Scott Taylor, specialist in French cinéma and theatre will host the Après film discussion. Don't forget to purchase a hard copy of the 2009-2010 Ciné-Club program at the movie! Your donation will help us buy new DVDs for our growing Médiathèque.

The book follows events in the life of a concierge, Renée Michel, whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl named Paloma Josse. P...aloma is the daughter of an upper-class family living in the upscale Parisian apartment building where Renée works.
Featuring a number of erudite characters, The Elegance of the Hedgehog is full of allusions to literary works, music, films, and paintings. It incorporates themes relating to philosophy, class consciouness, and personal conflict. The events and ideas of the novel are presented through the thoughts and reactions of two narrators, Renée and Paloma. The changes of narrator are marked by switches of typeface. In the case of Paloma, the narration takes the form of her written journal entries and other philosophical reflections; Renée's story is also told in the first person but more novelistically and in the present tense.
First released in August 2006 by Gallimard, the novel became a publishing success in France the following year, selling over a million copies.
