Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) On August 8, we offered a very special opportunity to MOHAI members to visit an ancient Squaxin tribal site in the Olympia area. Located on property belonging to Ralph Munro, former Secretary of State of Washington, the archaeological site is being excavated and studied under the auspices of the Squaxin Tribe and South... Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC).

According to an article in American Archeology (Winter 2007-08), about 600 years ago “members of what are now referred to as the Southern Lushootseed language group, descendants of maritime clans that had long inhabited the area and ancestors of the Squaxin, began to harvest shellfish and salmon [here].” (Author: Doug Gantenbein) The site is where people camped while gathering food and preparing it for storage or trade.

Visitors met at the site and had a truly remarkable experience at the dig. It was an amazing opportunity for our members to see archaeology in action and to better understand the rich heritage of Native American culture. The commentary by Dr. Dale Croes, a Professor of Anthropology at SPSCC, his associates and Ralph Munro added immeasurably to the understanding and appreciation of the site and the process. All of our guests enjoyed the afternoon and many ventured on to visit the Squaxin Island Tribal Museum. Many thanks to Ralph and his team for extending this invitation to MOHAI members, and generously sharing your time and expertise!
