- "Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention."
Matthew 7:13-14 (the Message)
"I admit I once lived by rumors of you;
now I have it all firsthand—from my own eyes and ears!
I'm sorry—forgive me. I'll never do that again, I promise!
I'll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of rumor."

- SYNOPSIS:
God has offered us firsthand knowledge of His love, His grace, and His power. Yet so often, we too easily settle for someone else's descriptions, the Cliff notes from another's spiritual journey. We are content for "God-experts" to do the heavy lifting and give us the bottom line. But as is the case with any secondhand information, the truth eventually deteriorates and crumbs of rumor are all that remain.
Suddenly, a crisis hits and life begins to unravel. When things don't go as we had planned, our thin view of God is challenged. In those critical moments, we can choose to walk away from God, or to let our questions lead us home.
Using four stories of the Ark of the Covenant, the book outlines rumors about God that are prevalent in contemporary Christian culture. Each story begins with a crisis and ends with a question that is our clue to the truth about God. When we choose to engage God with our questions, to wrestle with God-- like Jacob and Job and David-- we will see rumors die and revelation come alive. Wrestling with God may not provide us with all the answers to our question, but it will produce in us a firsthand faith.
