Security On Campus, Inc. "Jonathan Kassa, executive director of Security on Campus, acknowledged the confusing aspects of the Clery Act. But, he said, Tarleton 'can't be [let] off the hook' because of confusion about the mandates of a law the school has been operating under for nearly two decades. Alerting students to the sexual assaults, for ...instance, is 'an ethical and moral obligation, not a compliance obligation,' he said."

Tarleton State University officials learned recently that underreporting campus crime could be expensive. The ultimate source of that lesson? Their own journalism students, who started investigating the Stephenville university's crime statistics thre

Glad to hear. Students and parents have every right to know that campus is not a perfectly safe place. This should open people's eyes to the topic of self-defense on campus, as well.

Security On Campus, Inc. According to Security on Campus (SOC) Director of Public Policy S. Daniel Carter, the Department of Ed will not update the Clery handbook until next year, at the earliest. Because of this delay, SOC will be issuing some interim guidance on the new rules. “We anticipate putting out an analysis of the regulations [this] ...week to help explain them point by point,” he says.

"Since the Virginia Tech rampage, all universities have tried to prepare for the rare incident of a person on campus with a gun."
Rampage? The only reason this was a rampage is because no one could be armed to ... See Moredefend themselves and shoot back. Also, no one is preparing for "a person ... with a gun" -- they are preparing for an active shooter. There is a huge difference, especially considering there are many campuses where people carry guns every day legally and responsibly.

I'm glad you used the phrase,"rare incident". That's what these shooting are. There is absolutely no need to over react by arming masses of students with handguns. I caution you, arm students and shootings on a college campus will not be labeled a "Rare Incident".

If I were you, I'd be more concerned about rapes, assaults, burglaries, and other such crimes that occur on the college campus daily. If you really want to help stop violence on the college campus, highlight some of these issues and work to resolve them.

Walter, with all due respect, the 'everyone is drunk and stoned' argument is as bad of a fallacy as it gets. Do you use the same logic when it comes to students having cars on campus? Pocket knives? And owning a firearm and carrying it day to day - including on campus - is about FAR more than the rare campus shooting. Though, we should note that at... See More the campuses that allow carry on campus, there have been no shootings and also no problem with drunk people shooting up poker games. You might also note that most students who own guns (i.e. are of age) live off campus, and there aren't problems there, either.

I've never heard of a student running down multiple number of students with a car one after another or someone stabbing multiple number of students with a pocket knife before being subdued. You're trying to kill a rat with a machine gun.You can't put out a fire by adding fuel to the fire. You and your buddies at the NRA are opening up pandora's box and you will not be able to control the demons when they are out.
