In my free time, when not working or gaming, I go to music shows with my friends. I like bands. Like, a lot, and I love to see live shows...

Hehe. I knew you'd say that. We could do a world-wide "Where's L.A.?", sort of like, "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" but maybe sans the red coat.

This is the worst day ever. All week I've had a serious flu, have fallen behind on work, will miss the weekend's Halloween parties and to make matters worse, I've got to MOVE TO A NEW APARTMENT this Sunday, which means instead of resting I have to get my house packed up.Life is hard...

When making yesterday's "I'm so busy" excuses rationalizations for not posting frequently, I forgot to mention something else cool: I'll also be contributing some reviews to AV Club's Sawbuck Gamer section, where we look at smaller titles, many of them indie or off-the-beaten-path, that can be had...

Thanks for being so patient with the somewhat sparse posting schedule lately. Been so busy -- but hopefully with stuff you'll like.First up: I have fallen into a black hole, my friends -- my waking free time (ha ha) has been devoured lately by Atlus and From Software's Demon's Souls...

It looks really good and fun, the only thing that keeps me from getting it is my love of being productive. Maybe for X-mas.

Into the era of accessible games, Demon’s Souls charges like an armored knight facing down a horde of ghouls. It relies on conventions that game design was supposed to have abandoned long ago, and unabashedly rejects the casual player. ...

Ah, ok. As someone who regularly has trouble with games, I'll probably have to pass. I know you guys all say it's a good kind of difficult, a rewarding kind, but I get angry playing the simplest games. I think this game might actually kill me.

[lookin' good, hottie]Sometimes I wish "people in the real world" were more interested in video games, so that I could talk about 'em with them...

I am, of course, jealous of you Leigh. Since I tend to transpose everything you write about games into the world of comics (even though this transposition frequently doesn't make sense, and even though I love games dearly--Symphony of the Night being tattooed onto the pleasure centers of my brain), I can't help wishing that I received such ... Read Morereactions when I told people that I wanted to do graduate studies in comics. This may speak to your fervent wish that video games never go the way of comics, into an insular little backwater--which is fair enough. I've accepted that the joys and intellectual fulfillment I get from comics doesn't require notice on a broader cultural stage (beyond, say, the occasional couple of page in the NYT Magazine or a section of the Virginia Quarterly Review). But I do sometimes wish that conversations with people who don't read comics didn't always start from the very first principles. Sometimes it's fun (sort of depends on who's asking), but it gets tiring to explain that no, I don't actually want to make comics, and that yes, people do write criticism about them, and no, I don't particularly like superheroes, and yes I have read Persepolis but howabout we discuss that another time. And I can sometimes be obnoxious in that regard--someone once called me out for rolling my eyes after I was asked whether there was a standard number of panels per page. But although the individual competitiveness may be peculiar to games (nobody can challenge me at comics-reading, although that might be kind of cool), I figure you have some of the problems that a professional critic associated with any industry might have. I would imagine that professional movie critics often dread conversations with people who profess to really love movies. That seems like it's a matter of taste and economics as much as anything--the stuff that people know best because it's more widely available and better promoted is not always the best stuff. There was nothing like the release of the Watchmen movie to make me thoroughly, profoundly uninterested in ever talking about Watchmen ever again.

Part of me agrees but part of me disagrees. I think that talent and experience are required but looking at some of the reviews today by these "professional" reviewers are just laughably bad. I mean look @ IGN's closing comment on Forza 3's review. Look at some of the articles Destructoid publishes. Spoilers in video reviews (GT).

In fact I'd go as far to say that games journalism isn't really journalism but its not like regular journalism is what it once was.

I've always been fascinated by the gamer community's tendency (need?) to personify games companies, its quickness to vilify what it sees as the "bad" guy (those who prioritize profits, natch), and its preoccupation with the personas of various individuals in our field (even journos)...

I just ordered that shirt when they went on sale yesterday. Bought the Blood one for my boyfriend and he gets tons of compliments too. That's what I love about Meat Bun shirts: They are subtle but obvious to other gamers. I can't wait for the next line.
