What do art and design have to do with poverty? In today’s society, should art and design be seen as necessities or luxuries? How should the benefits of art and design be distributed across different socio-economic groups? Does a just society have any ethical obligation to share the benefits of art and design with thos...e in poverty? What are some of the philosophical foundations for thinking about these questions?
This lecture will explore these questions and will share practical examples of individuals and groups who are working at the intersection of art, design and social justice.

Art Lab @ MoCA Shanghai plays host to an event that provides an exploration into the sights and sounds of a city through the creative vision of ten artists. Three musicians, three video artists, three visual artists and one video installation work combine to share a fresh view on this ever-changing city.
Through both v...isual and audio mediums this event challenges the listener/viewer to see parts of a city that are often overlooked and often forgotten. Taking minimalism as the focal and creative direction from which to extract the visions, the event allows a complicated and diverse city to be shown in a refreshing sense of simplicity.
Utilizing the creative talents of local Chinese and local expatriates from around the world to create original work especially for the event, the evening’s aim is to take you through an audio and visual landscape of Shanghai. In a nutshell: a Minimalist homage of Shanghai: stripped and simplified.
Participating artists include musicians MHP and Alex Furk, Shanghai-based VJs Vader, Hean and Hector, and visual artists Lucy Brydon, Kathryn Gohmert and Nial O’Connor, with a video installation by Michael Beets.
Performance begins at 9:00 pm on Sat, May 16th.
50RMB ticket price includes one free drink.

_________
Sweedy Van Soul aims to arouse reflection on neo-Confucianism and aesthetics of the 21st century via the visual experience of... new media rather than merely pursuing glamorous appearance. The indefinable feel of dislocation between the video of 2004 and the installation of 2009 signifies the fragile inheritance of values which might not withstand a single blow. Entangled bodies symbolize the complicated connection of social network while the long tubes take the shape of an umbilical cord between mother and child. What is it that connects these people? Is it blood or Confucian orthodoxy?
