We tried to reach the Yao Ming Foundation, which is responsible for managing his engagement and commitments on sharks. Rightfully, they are careful about where and how to direct his name. If anyone would be willing to help us reach them, we would be much obliged.

Dear Editor,

In Celine Sun's article (Owners splash out as pampered pets get taste of high life, Dec 14), she makes a claim the SCMP should not circulate, namely, that ingredients from shark fin are "good for the joints".

Not only are sharks being overly fished every year, with the largest demand coming for their cartilage, there is no evidence that consuming shark has beneficial effects on joints. Considering the recent evidence that shark tissue is high in methyl mercury, which is toxic to humans and animals, the opposite benefits are more likely.

The anti-cancerous benefits of shark cartilage have been disputed by the American Cancer Society, the FDA, the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, and many other respected health and scientific research organizations.

According to the IUCN, one third of open ocean sharks are threatened with extinction, so it highly unfortunate that the SCMP is continuing to promote this myth about sharks, complicit in further threatening their survival.
