A veritable one-man band, Shimshai sings uplifting devotional lyrics with a universal message of truth, set to reggae-inspired acoustic folk grooves. An advocate of the simple, sacred life..., Shimshai has taken his music up and down the west coast for nearly a decade, playing piano, guitar, sitar, woodwinds and ukulele, featuring songs from his CD, “I Sense Your Presence,” and his band album, “Toward the One,” with the Natural MystiquEnsemble.
The Bay Area’s folkloric band Alúna takes its name from the term in Colombia’s Kogi Indian language meaning pure thought, spirit, soul. Playing traditional folk instruments handmade in Colombia, Aluna preserves the sound of music that comes out of the combining of Indigenous, African, and Spanish cultures in that country. While cumbia is the focus, Alúna incorporates a mix of traditional and original compositions that ride on a variety of rhythms, including Puya, Bullerengue, Tambora, Currulao and Mapalé. The players are not just musicians but are also dedicated to study and preservation of the music and the culture it springs from. The instruments include tambora (much like a djun djun), alegre (much like djembe drum), gaita flutes (the macho and the ember) playing in harmony, maracas, millo flute, and llamador. Formed in 2005, Alúna includes all four members of Antioquia (Paul Martin on maracas, tambora, llamador; Maddy Streicek on vocals, maracas, llamador; Craig Miller on alegre; Adley Penner on gaita & tambora) along with singer and multi-instrumentalist Virgilio Guevara and lead singer Andrea. www.alunaband.com Read More
