Red Jacket Community Library Join us as we discuss Russo's latest novel:
“Griffin has been tooling around for nearly a year with his father’s ashes in the trunk, but his mother is very much alive and not shy about calling on his cell phone. She does so as he drives down to Cape Cod, where he and his wife, Joy, will celebrate the marriage of their d...aughter’s best friend. For Griffin this is like to driving into the past, since he took his childhood summer vacations here. And the Cape is where he and Joy honeymooned and where they drafted the Great Truro Accord, a plan for their lives together that’s now thirty years old and has largely come true. But be careful what you pray for, especially if you manage to achieve it. By the end of this perfectly lovely weekend, the past has so thoroughly swamped the present that the future suddenly hangs in the balance. And when, a year later, a far more important wedding takes place, their beloved daughter’s. Griffin is now chauffeuring two urns of ashes and both he and Joy have brought dates along. How in the world could this have happened? A novel of introspection and every family feeling imaginable, with a middle-aged man confronting his parents and their failed marriage, his own troubled one, his daughter’s new life and, finally, what it was he thought he wanted and what in fact he has.”

“Ellen Hopkins' verse novel, Crank, chronicles the turbulent and often disturbing relationship between Kristina and the "monster," the highly addictive drug crystal meth, or "crank." Kristina is introduced to the drug while visiting her largely absent father. While un...der the influence of the monster, Kristina discovers her sexy alter-ego, Bree. Bree will do all the things good girl Kristina won't, including attracting the attention of dangerous boys who can provide her with a steady flow of crank. Soon, her grades plummet, her relationships with family and friends deteriorate, and she needs more and more of the monster just to get through the day. Kristina hits her lowest point when she is raped by one of her drug dealers and becomes pregnant as a result. Her decision to keep the baby slows her drug use, but doesn't stop it, and the author leaves the reader with the distinct impression that Kristina/Bree may never be free from her addiction. The descriptions of crystal meth use and its consequences are powerful, and will horrify and transfix older teenage readers.
