Here's crazy Willie in the first match (3:15) of the first ever World Open Full-Contact Championships in 1975. This whole movie is fabulous. If you see it all the way through, there are some mind-shattering techniques. Of course, the Japs won. Mas Oyama said he would commit sepuku if they didn't. What a way to motivate your students!

Shotokan Karate by Khushru Jehangir Sethna To those who misunderstand my arguments about sports karate or traditional karate... What i am clearly stating is ..... Train realistically... and practically nothing else... Sports karate has its cons... and so does traditional karate... both are conservative... as the karateka believe that they are doing a particular style... Rather be safe than sorry!! - Kj

Do full contact with no padding. Maybe don't use hand strikes to the face. Why not? Because bare-knuckle face punching is BANNED in world competition. I think your "human anatomy" argument is gibberish, KJ. I know you've seen some of the full-contact fights I'm talking about, and I've done them myself. Kicking someone full force in the face ... See Moreor striking the vulnerable points along the center line with no pads is "deadly"? It COULD be, but it's very hard to kill someone who knows what you know or more. People get knocked the fuck out all the time in these tournaments, but I can't recall someone being killed. That's because the participants have to demonstrate proficiency through board/brick breaking, having so many years training, etc. before they're allowed to fight. The way you're talking, someone would think you've never done any two-person practice. We all know you have. What kind? If you don't call it "sparring," what do you call it? Are you saying that unless you're allowed to use banned techniques--throat and goin strikes, whatever--any mention of sport or competition is not karate or is it only the context in which the techniques are used--a street fight--that bring out real "defense" karate. I've talked about how silly these arguments are, but they always bring out folks who want to battle over semantics. So I'm weighing in now.

All these kicks are full-force. Are you saying that if another fighter using, say Shotokan, kicked somone in the head that it would be all this "one shot one kill" business? Did you see anyone die? If the fights were allowed to continue, of course, then someone would. This is the purest expression of combat karate--of "fighting" karate as the ... See MoreKyokushin call it-- that we're allowed without having to kill. If that's not karate, then I don't know what is. Maybe it's a vulgar display of power. If these guys were in a real fight, they would almost certainly strike the face, but those kicks areabout as real as you're going to get in any scenario. Still, I have to concede that if one of the opponents was untrained or in bad physical or mental condition, the probability of this so-called "first hit" being deadly would go way up. In the shape I'm in now, for example, there's no way in hell I'd participate in something like that.

David Pettersson Hi! Found an intresting youtubeclip about what being a blackbelt (regardless of style or martial art) really means, according to them. What do you think, based upon your experinence? As far as I'm concerned, the makers of this clip kinda nailed it. At lest for me. Keep training hard and well! Oss!

It looks like TKD to me. Given all the neato mosquito equipment and the sloppy techniques, they probably give black belts (or "junior" black belts) away for money. All that being said, the message is excellent. All my old 7th graders who practiced martial arts of any kind were kind, respectful, hard-working students. I wish my parents had started me younger.
