Fight Zone USA This week in BJJ class: Even further review of advanced ways to pass the half-guard, transitioning to an open half-guard when an opponent runs from the guard, and how/when to switch to the negative side of the half-guard. It was an excellent week of class - everyone got to learn how the famed "Terere" passes the guard (he uses the same pass Leandro taught for every guard)!

Fight Zone USA This week in class: Further review of sweeping and passing the half-guard as well as transitioning to the open half-guard (when your opponent blocks your half-guard entry). Try to limit yourself to taking the back, sweeping into your opponent, and rolling your opponent. Also, remember, from the open half-guard there are plenty of opportunities to pull your partner back to half!

Fight Zone USA Last week in BJJ class was crazy!!! We covered the half-guard: getting into the half-guard from the positions we have been doing for six weeks, getting out of a tight cross-face and underhook control, getting into the deep position, taking the back, sweeping by tapping/pulling the leg, and sweeping by pulling the leg close and rolling the opponent to the other side.
Fight Zone USA We are the Number 1 No-Gi Team in the World!!!! Yesterday, our BJJ Competition Team - Check-Mat BJJ, won the First Place Team at the No-Gi World Championships. Many of the students that placed and did well were Leandro's students from Brazil! Thanks to all of the Fight Zone USA students that came out to support our teammates!

Fight Zone USA Just finished our week of reviewing the mount, side control, and back (attacks and defenses) that we've been learning for the past 6 weeks. For the next couple of weeks, we get to the next piece of the puzzle - the one position you end up in most when defending these positions... the half-guard.
Fight Zone USA Thanks to legendary black belt, Otavio "Ratinho" Couto for stopping by Fight Zone USA for some training on Saturday! For those that do not know, Ratinho was one of Leandro's first instructors, teaching him when he was five years old and still a part of Master Romero Jacare's old academy in Rio de Janeiro! Fight Zone USA For judo class, Josh has been showcasing how to turn your opponent and set up a myriad of throws. Last night, we did the turn with kouchi-gake, ouchi-gari, and sasae tsuri-komi ashi. Check out the judo classes, because they will only be free for about another week and a half! Best judo in Southern California!
Fight Zone USA This week we are focusing on escaping the back and escaping the turtle in BJJ class. So far, we have covered escaping to the proper side and escaping when the choke is deep and your opponent has you in a very bad situation. We also focused on using the cross foot to hook your way to guard from the turtle and using turtle posture to thwart the back attack/control. I love this stuff!
